I know what you're saying, Kabu, and I've tried that. But the guilt-trips brought on but some of these dreams still persist! Like Jacob Marley, I forged them link by link, and yard by yard, and must carry them with me all of my days . . .

James...the only person you need to ask forgivness from is yourself. The rest of the World doesn't matter.

Re: Re: Re:

You may be on to something there, Kabu. Perhaps, deep down, my subconscious does want to continue to punish me, since I haven't really approached anyone looking for a 'pardon.' If that is indeed the case, then I will probably have to continue to fight these demons for the rest of my life. I might be able to weaken them a bit, but I sincerely doubt I can ever totally defeat them . . .

Re: Re:

give it a try....what have you got to lose...unless deep inside you don't believe that you have the right to forgive yourself and without being conciously aware you really want to hold onto the memories, continue to punish yourself.

Re: JimmyA

I've been trying, Sir Wiley, believe me I've been trying! And although I really do appreciate your suggestions, I believe I have a somewhat different mindset than most people where my adamant, stubborn side would probably find going to a priest or a psychologist a complete waste of time ( although it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to 'talk things out' with someone ). I just sometimes feel that this problem with my dreams is like carrying around an awful scar somewhere on your body from some terrible accident that I must simply endure for the rest of my life. I'm so glad I'm not a 'drinker' . . .

JimmyA

I would like to suggest that you become a Catholic for 1 visit to a confessional and let it all out, just you and a priest with 'God'.

Or a few sessions with a good psychotherapist should rid you of this horrid problem. I'm a lot older than you are and I cn tell you it helped me immensely in my life.

Your book certainly took courage to write but if you can put it behind you, move on and be content with who you are now JimmyA

Re:

Using your example, shamasehar, a 'clean slate' can be written upon again, sometimes with the same end result. What I think I somehow need is a brand new slate, instead of simply cleaning the 'old' one. How that can actually be achieved is beyond me, but perhaps a few of Kabu's suggestions will be a step in the right direction . . .

Re:

I understand completely, C C T. I'm sure 'unresolved issues' with others can factor in concerning these types of dreams, along with certain fears and regrets. Sometimes, for me, it almost seems that these dreams are some sort of punishment because of those past mistakes and regrets. If that's the case, then I'm probably going to be in trouble for a long time . . .

Re:

I'm sure there are many factors to consider, Annicita, but unfortunately, astrology doesn't really factor in for me. No matter what is in the "7th house," where the moon beams are shining, or whose 'sign' is currently entering our realm, I have a feeling that nothing is going have any real affect on these dreams. And I don't even eat spicy foods either . . .

Thanks, lovelylady. Hopefully that will help . . .

Re: Jimmy

That would seem, Naut, to be almost the exact opposite of what I experience. I rarely wake up with a 'good feeling' over any dream, and I'm somehow forced to remember almost every detail! There are rare occasions where I actually don't remember all of the details, but still do remember that the dream itself was basically unpleasant. I'm actually somewhat surprised that this hasn't lead to severe bouts of insomnia . . .

Re:

That might work, Kabu, and is a good suggestion, but something tells me that it may end up being an exercise in futility. For years I have tried various methods of reducing the frequency of such dreams, either through methods suggested by others or something I may have read here or there. Nothing really works, primarily because dreams are probably one of the few 'mental' arenas we really have no actual control over. It's like having an old, black & white TV that is stuck on and can only get one channel. And of course, I can't simply throw the 'TV' away . . .

Re:

I have a feeling, FSI, that everyone does, and there's probably not a whole heck of a lot we can do about it. Like I wrote, my only wish is that they weren't so frequent for me . . .

Sometime everything is so real in my dreams while on some occasions the whole thing is unreal and complex, nightmarish too.The best part is its a clean slate in the morning. I hope what Kabu suggests works well for you.

I sometimes have dreams of driving old vechicles without brakes or brakes that do not work but I never seem to crash. I do have a dream sometimes, a nasty one I am mad with my Father. I know the reason, but I could never resolve it. He just loved me too much. We all have our unresolved problems, I suppose dreams are meant to help solve them, but probably that function has not caught up with other changes in life.

not sure if you believe in astrology but mercury was in retrograde for a long time this year.....brings up things to bless and let go with love and kindness....not easy to do sometimes

Jimmy

I dream a fair bit, but few of my dreams are unpleasant let alone 'nightmarish'; at worst they sometimes have a certain 'compulsive' quality about them. I sometimes wake and know I had a 'pleasant' dream without the slightest memory of the details - all that's left is a good feeling, and a slight regret that I don't remember...

I do understand why you are having these dreams.

sharing them is a great iddea and I doubt whether any one here will mind. We all vent a little sometimes...and it helps.

Possibly writing some of the old stuff..totally uncut or censored then burning it, watch it go up in flames ...that can be a way of letting go and your mind can rest at night.

Most of my dreams are about regular every day occurences. Occaisionally, I do have dreams that are painful...
