Yeah I think if you are really into a subject, the numbers in the class don't matter and you get to even keep time both the teacher & student.

I did two years to get my Nurse educator degree and there were three of us only in the class. for one course we joined the nurse practitioners to make a decent sized group.

Kinda reminds me of my days in art school. Some classes had around a dozen students, others only three or four. As always, it depended on the subject itself. He should have been able to handle a larger class . . .
