There are pros & cons to both, but the smaller boardwalks are what I had always been used to. However, since my wife and I have both been somewhat disenchanted with large crowds over the years, we rarely go to or on those boardwalks anymore. . .

I have grown up with a shore baldwalk in beach nearby in the form of Ocean City, Maryland. I will take that.

Bill, I prefer a quiet beach with very few people where I can walk the beach on the wet sand near the waters edge and think.
