One early fall weekend when the kids were young, R and I drove
up the river road to Pere Marquette state park, which is next to the Mississippi north of Alton, IL. We parked near the picnic area, set out our tablecloth & food as the kids went running, throwing rocks into the water, etc. We hadn't been there long when we noticed great clouds of Monarch butterflies drifting along just above our heads. We stood there amazed for a long time. Apparently we were in their migration path.

I've never even heard of such things before. The last time I fed a butterfly caterpillar, I fed it lots of fresh parsley. The butterfly turned out to be a big blue one.
