- Go to Cell phones can be annoying, but they are necessary nonetheless . . .
Re: Re: Re:
I can see that, shamasehar. You're first instinct was to 'text' him a message. It must have seemed odd when his phone started buzzing! Oops, too late! At least you still have a 'landline.' Many people are opting to go 'wireless' these days and rely solely on their cell phones! I hope your husband got a chuckle out of that episode . . .

Re: Re:
Well I thought that I have acted promptly(one is so used to rushing for the mobile phone when you need to do something urgently)and realized what I had done when my husband's phone buzzed next to me.I should have simply used the landline to inform anyone at his workplace.

Re:
But if he left his phone behind, shamasehar, how did he receive the text? Or rather, on what?

Re:
None that I can see, chuck. But here's the part that really gets me! If you're standing in line at a store, and the person in front of you or behind you is engaged in some inane, annoying, pointless, loud conversation with who knows who, and you were to give this inconsiderate person a dirty look or actually say something, you're instantly the 'bad guy.' You may even get a "Mind your own business" retort, as if you were doing something rude or inconsiderate! And that's when I want to rip that phone from their hands and throw it across the store! We've already heard the news reports about people being shot now for disturbing others in a movie theater or a restaurant. How many must die before the message finally gets out?

Re:
That's all too true, C C T. Sometimes, when you ask someone for their 'phone number,' they have to pause and consider "Which one?" They are a nuisance, but they are vital as well. I would say that I hope some day people will put their phones down and only use them when absolutely necessary, but I know that's probably never going to happen . . .

Re: jimmy
Well, jean, 'no telemarketers' would be a nice thought, but difficult to ultimately control. A friend once told me of an incident he heard about where a woman, sitting in the front row of a Broadway play, never bothered to turn her damned cell phone off, and it began to ring - loudly - in the middle of the performance. The main actor actually stopped the play, broke character, and asked the woman to please answer her phone so the play could resume. Something tells me, however, that this woman is the kind that doesn't embarrass easily, so the message was probably lost on her, and I'm sure she'll do it again! I think I would die a happy man if someone could explain this need everyone suddenly feels to be in constant contact with at least one other person while they go about their daily tasks! Ridiculous . . .

Well I can't find my Sim card Jimmy perhaps I will get a new phone and transfer the balance from the old one. Well not me the shop assistant. They are a darned nuisance but a lot of firms want that number as if it is ones birth certificate.

i agree we all need a cell phone and they are making them assessable to everyone now (or should i say affordable.) kids need to carry them and the parents need to have tracking devices on their phones....everyone else should have them in case of an emergency, like being stuck on the road, or robbed, or whatever.....but there should be a law about using them in moving vehicles. or in resturants, if you get a call you should be required to get up and go outside to talk..... and i could think of a few other restrictions.....like no telemarketing calls.

Re:
I understand, Annicita, but if there is an emergency, wouldn't you feel a little better and a little more secure having one with you? Again, it's a 'just in case' scenario, but you may want to think about carrying one with you again . . .

Re:
That's true too, adnohr, like ignoring any message that says the Rangers are going to knock off the Canadiens in 5 or 6 games! ( sorry . . . I couldn't resist! ) No play by play needed for that . . .

Re:
That's the way to do it, Justi. A simple message sometimes is all it takes. That's why, although it sometimes angers me, I've always been extremely curious as to what these people walking around or standing in a line are texting that's so important that they have to do it right then and there! I guarantee you that, if people only used their phones in cases of emergencies, you wouldn't see any of that going on! Maybe some day people will put their phones down and do 'other things' . . .

Re: Jimmy
I wish ours was that simple, Naut. I'm not really sure what the actual delay was all about, nor why it took a while for the new codes to 'take.' It could have been attributed to the fact that our phones are indeed ancient ( by today's standards anyway ). But, when all is said and done, we have them functioning again, and hopefully we won't have to do this again for quite a while . . .

Re: JimmA, did you attempt to change the Simcard. by yourself?
Actually, dsm tchr, my wife did it, and did it properly with no problems ( she's very good with things like that ). It was just the delay in both getting these 'new codes,' and then getting them installed. But, everything's back up and running again, and I no longer feel 'naked' without my phone with me . . .

Re:
It really does, FSI. Like I wrote, it's really only there for emergencies, but it has become a part of my group of 'personal items' I usually always have with me! The one time you leave it at home would probably be the one time you wish you had it with you! Better safe than sorry . . .

Re:
And isn't that all you really need, Kabu? I mean, they have phones now that can take pictures and videos, access the internet, place you on conference calls, change the oil in your car, fix your dinner and review your children's homework. In fact, some of them almost don't seem to function as a simple phone anymore! Where is it all headed . . . ?

My cell is mostly used for texting play by plays of hockey games with my son and other fans - much cheaper and one can ignore it when desired!

I don't know how I did without mine, yet it is not over used. I find it delightful to be able to text some people I love but do not like to get into long drawn out conversations with. This allows me to keep in touch but not held up for long periods.

Something must have gone wrong in the process. I had my service provider put in a more powerful one - it was a matter of three minutes, and that was that; no fuss, no muss, no bother...

we keep one very basic in the car for an emergency. It lives in the car. I use a basic el cheapo ...for when I am in Australia. Just one that I put a few $$$ on and text folks to let them know how I am and when I will see them.
