Re:

I have a feeling, shamasehar, that many people are in similar situations. Not too long before my parents retired, my father had both of his hips replaced, and the cold New Jersey winters simply became too much for him to bear. As a result, they moved to the warmer climes of Florida. Fortunately, I and my siblings were already out and on our own, so children were not a factor in their moving. And besides financial reasons, safety would also be a factor in determining where one might wish to live. I find it a shame sometimes that people can't just live in peace with their fellow man, no matter where on the planet you reside. Perhaps some day . . .

Re: jimmy

That may be true on the surface, jean, but I do know a few people who have moved to other states simply because of financial reasons, and now claim they are better off for having done it. My younger brother is a perfect example. After the birth of his first child, he began to weigh all the financial aspects of raising a family in New Jersey, that now included schools. He then went on-line and compared certain numbers with other states, and as a result, moved to North Carolina, and is apparently happy and doing well there. The numbers may not be greatly different, but enough for people to make those kinds of decisions! However, no matter what, you have to be happy where you are. Florida probably isn't so bad ( my parents used to live just north of Tampa ), so make the best of it . . .

Re:

It would appear then, Annicita, that you may not necessarily be searching for that 'greener grass,' but are just experimenting with other areas, which is always good. When my wife and I went on our honeymoon, we drove up to and through New York state, Vermont and New Hampshire, staying in various bed & breakfasts along the way. We had a wonderful time, saw some spectacular views and places of interest, and were awed by some of the imagery. But, as always, there's no place like home. Jersey may have its flaws, but we have our roots here, so we'll make the best of it. I'm assuming that's how it is for you as well. Missouri may be a somewhat difficult haven for you, but it's still home! I'm sure you're making the best of it too . . .

I live in Kolkata,India.Well I do like living there as its safer and the pace of life slow as compared to say Delhi or Mumbai. The only time I want to flee is summers as its terribly hot and humid which I manage to as I travel a lot these days. The children did move out much earlier first for education then jobs and later marriage. For me after a couple of months it's always going back'home' to Kolkata.

i will be happy where i am because i am to tired to think about moving....but i have to admit as i grow older i long to go home, to my childhood home in kansas....i miss the small town, i still have relatives there... but it is colder in the winter and they have been having alot more snow in the winter so i best stay here in florida.  i dont believe one place is more expensive than another, if you take everything in consideration, like home cost, taxes, food costs, insurance etc.  i have lived in kansas, denver, new york city and now in florida, and could not tell a difference in cost of living on the whole.

Re:

It almost sounds, C C T, like I might run into an Eric Idle, a John Cleese or a Michael Palin around almost every corner! And believe it or not, much of the crime rate around here is also dependent on people's actual possessions. For example, when we see the list of the makes and types of cars usually being stolen, 'ours' are never on the list! And our cell phones are so old ( but still functioning perfectly ) that a street crook wouldn't like twice at them ( yes, cell and smart phones are currently the 'hot' item for thieves today! ). However, you're neighborhood does sound quieter, and that alone may be enough for me to consider relocating there . . .

Re:

Are you sure, adnohr? Perhaps it's me who'll be doing the razzing! No, no, no . . . I'm not one to gloat. Besides, being a long time hockey fan, I'm well aware of the fact that one game does not a series make! But, you did get spanked! Not a great way to start a series, especially at home, and with a trip to The Cup on the line! I'm glad my boys played well, but it's still much too early to get overly excited! Let's see what happens in Game 2, and how your boys respond. And we'll see if they start Price or Budaj. Bring it on . . .

Oh, and happy to hear you love your bush . . .

Re:

Very good to hear, Justi. I'm actually hoping more people feel that way! I've always told people that, there's a great difference between a house and a home. A house is a tangible structure. A home is a state of mind, a feeling that surrounds you and gives you comfort. You can find a house anywhere! But once you've established a home . . .

Re: Jimmy

I'm sure I could, Naut. We've always felt like distant cousins to our friends in the Great White North anyway! Believe it or not, I actually met a girl on-line through a chat room ( before I met my wife of course ) and we've remained 'pen pals' ever since. Where doe she live? Montreal, of course! And I spent some 'time' with an interesting fellow years ago who came from - where else? - Mount Hanley, Nova Scotia! Small interactions, I grant you, but it's a start! And I can handle the chills. Just please . . . hold the ice and snow!

Re:

That's good to hear, FSI. It seemed to me that, even in the states where many people wanted to vacate, that particular group was comprised of less than 50% of those polled. Good to know that you fall into that higher percentage who's willing to make the best of it right where he is . . .

Re:

You're absolutely right, Kabu. I do agree. However, you may be looking at this particular conundrum from a purely superficial point of view. I have a feeling that those who longed to 'move out' were probably looking at it from a purely 'financial' point of view. I've lived in Jersey all my life, and although I have moved around ( 3 separate times ), I've managed to stay within her borders. But it is one of the most expensive states to live in, for various reasons. We're very fortunate in that my wife inherited her childhood home from her father lock, stock and barrel, so we have no mortgage. But our property taxes are THE highest in the country per capita, and we struggle seemingly every year to keep up with its constant rise! Since we've been married ( 12 years ) it has actually doubled! And if I told you the actual figures involved, you might pass out! Otherwise, my wife and I ( and our cats ) are very happy here! The only reason we would ever consider moving was if we really, really felt we could no longer afford the property taxes . . .

Yes it's pretty good here Jimmy not much crime because there is nothing to steal.

Women are safe because they are so tough. Also everyone is a comedian if not up to your standard.

Jimmy I love it right where I am. It is beautiful, friendly, fairly safe and small.

Well, even though it's kind of chilly at times, come up to Ontario! It's really an amazing Province! It's about 48 times the size of N.J., and I'm sure you could find some place you'd like...

Like you, I feel that the want to move to some place new is a universal feeling.

As a Marylander, I am not surprised. Many of our residents are federal workers who move in from other states. I imagine many of those who want to move want to actually move back to their home states.

As for me, I had a year and a half period where I wanted to move, which I am currently detailing in The Car Wash Life. However, I have been happy in Maryland over the last four years.

I am one of the happiest Jim. I came Home. This little house on its beautiful patch of land is extremely precious to me...Well yes, take Wiley John out of the equation and it would be different of course...but I do love it here.  Trouble is we are a migrating type of species and the grass belonging to our neighbors is always greener looking than our own patch. My sis and hubby bought a house mainly for the garden which was lovely. Trouble was it was huge work to keep it lovely so they sold. I suppose I am saying the grass is often better because people there are working hard to keep it that way.
