Re: Re: Re: JimmyA

Believe me, I understand, TAPS! I did very well in Math, History and Geography, struggled a bit but got through Science and Biology, did what I had to do with Spelling and English, and was very athletic so even Gym wasn't that much of a problem. But when it came to Civics and Political Science, the teachers might as well have been speaking Portuguese . . .

Re: Re: JimmyA

Civics was my worst class ever.  My parents were very disappointed with me.  After that was over, I did better in school.

I'm sure it will be, Rumor. As with American politics, God Forbid anyone stands up, tells the absolute truth, doesn't waste time bad-mouthing their opponent, doesn't make a lot of ridiculous claims and promises, and actually has some sound and viable answers and solutions to certain problems. Yeah, I know. And if I believe that, someone has a bridge to sell me . . .

Re:

I never really was either, TAPS. I vaguely remember studying Civics in school, but it was one of those topics that, if you didn't give it your full, undivided attention, you'd be forever lost! I was forever lost . . .

Re:

Apparently, Annicita, those things don't apply when it comes to politics! I believe that that's what the courts are now going to try to decide, what certain candidates can and can't say anymore! I still think it's a joke, and a waste of time! We'll see . . .

Canada very soon...of course, with the same old mudslinging as always....

Re: Jimmy

Very well explained, Naut. Your rationale sounds very much like what my wife likes to use when it comes to people's general opinion of things: some people will love it, some people will hate it, and some people just won't care! Whether a politician . . . any politician . . . has a good idea, a bad idea, or no ideas, there is still going to be a certain amount of 'bullshit' mixed in with all the general rhetoric they're going to spew. They just can't seem to help themselves. And it probably does date back to ancient Athens, and beyond. Something happens to these people once they enter that D.C. arena. When in Rome, I guess . . .

Re:

It would appear, C C T, that the games most politicians play are the same on both sides of the pond! For some reason, that doesn't surprise me. Years ago, someone ( I believe it was a political journalist ) decided to keep track of all the promises various presiential candidates made during their campaigns, and then check back later after they were elected to see how many they actually kept. Needless to say, the percentages were appalling! The bullshit marches on . . .

Re: JimmyA

I couldn't agree more, Sir Wiley. And at least those door to door salesmen know their products are lousy! These cretins actually want us to believe they are genuine, when we all know they're not . . .

Re:

It probably would, FSI. But unfortuantely, it might also get you arrested, knowing how security is nowadays at these things! Remember when that Middle Eastern gentleman threw a shoe at President Bush a few years ago? The gesture may have had more of an impact if his shoe had actually hit its intended target . . .

Re:

Believe it or not, Kabu, I've never been to one of those 'rallies' either, and have no intention of going to one either! No, I was just being somewhat disingenuous when I suggested actually throwing mud at an overbearing candidate. But the metaphor still stands! I simply don't trust any politician, and have completely lost interest in anything any one of them has to say anymore . . .

Jimmy

I agree with you, at least for the most part! For the Supreme Court to get involved here would be the height of stupidity, and I don't think those judges are stupid!

Political lies and mudslinging and all the rest of it is as old as democracy, dating back (somewhat arbitrarily) to ancient Athens. Keep in mind - tyrants and dictators don't have to engage in mudslinging (though they may lie), they can simply shoot their opponents.

Since lying and mudslinging are a given, I tend to look past all that and want to know what they want to do! And while they may be able to lie about that also, those kinds of lies don't generally stand up to scrutiny as well as the others. Which is why I do make a distinction between three kinds of politicians: those with good good ideas, those with bad ideas, and finally those with no ideas...

Well I am like Bro. I never go to a campaign rally Jimmy. Fifty years ago some nutter decided to close down the trains that ran from Oxford to here anyone with any sense would have known that it would have made an ideal road, but no it was built on. bridges knocked down etc. Today we had a candidate plying for election his main promise to open the rail link again. Where would it run? Probably cost a fortune to carve a track through the country side and fight the objections. He deserves my vote.

I never go and listen to a politician speak, they are all like door to door salesmen and mostly their product is lousy too.

I am cynical, too, when it comes to politics...I like your idea of taking mudslinging literally. That will show them.

LOL...you read about as jaded and unbelieving of them all as what I know that I am. I wouldn't sling the mud at a rally though. I just don't go to those things ever, haven't since the early 80's. never joined a party either the main reason being I put travel before politics. Travelling is easier if one does not belong to any political group.
