A fascinating topic! And while it may be painful to find skeletons in one's forebears closets, only fools would allow that to reflect on you...

Actually dear friend, by filling in what you can on ancestry you are writing the story ...for those that really count, future generations. but we are enjoying what you write for us.
People were ashamed of someone in the family with mental health issues and sadly they were wiped from the memory. I know such stories of children born with problems who were hidden away all their lives.

Back in those years, people were ashamed of family members with mental problems and often kept their status hidden. My mother was like that when my Dad's Alzheimer's disease worsened and became noticeable. She stopped going to church and other social events because she didn't understand or want to try to explain what was wrong with him.

You have provided more interesting history, I see...When it comes to writing about things, write about what you are feeling regardless of whether it is happy or sad. That is when one's writing is the best.

Jean, if the story is too painful to recount, don't do it. But if you feel you can write about it, you should, as a way to honour their memories. Just because you write it out doesn't mean you have to share it with anyone. I hope you can find out more about Mary.

It may not necessarily be 'sad.' I don't think you'd find anyone's family history filled with nothing but 'heart-warming' tales. As with anything else, you must take the bad with the good. Keep going . . .

Sadly we find things in the past that are kept secret , but are the most interesting facets
ironically.
