I had to do observations as well...quite eye openers

Many of the things we observe in our pets can probably be attributed to repetition. They get used to certain sounds, certain movements, certain things happening the same time each day. But I also believe that they do understand certain words, and can associate them to certain events. We see this with a few of our cats, believe it or not. And you might want to check on Ben from time to time when he's out of your sight. He might be behind the couch with a pencil and notebook, working on his dissertation on your behavior as well . . .

I suppose you are the Alpha doggie Naut . The pack waits for your command, well Ben does as he probably thinks of himself as part or the whole of your pack. Interesting though and pity you did not keep your thesis.

That sounds like a very interesting assignment that you did...Reading this has me thinking about Pavlov's dog.

I love this. I watched for, perhaps six years, as my dad trained Llewellyn Setters to hunt for partridge. It is a complicated process and they are so smart. Once in a while you get one that will not train. Daddy called them playboys he said they only heard your fun words not your work words. It was an amazing process. I saw the photo of your cat Bubbles she is beautiful. I have always communicated with my cats.

Such a very interesting subject.  I just the other evening watched a PBS nature program where the fellow spent two+ years in the mountains observing mule deer.  He said pretty much the same things about them that you are telling us about Ben.  I love stuff like this.

i think our actions and body language and tone of voice have more impact than most of the words that we say...On the other hand...himself can be sound asleep in the bedroom and if I say to Wiley that I am going outside, Mr. G will be beside me in an instant.
