i use straw to help hold moisture in and to keep the weeds down, i was hoping that i could use it like a blanket and keep my plants from freezing, some froze and some did not.

Welcome back indeed! It has been a long time, hasn't it? I think I know how you feel, although my wife and I are probably a long way off from retiring ourselves. Hey, quitting the 'rat race' and working in your garden sounds good to me! Hang in there . . .
