I'm glad this experience is in the past for you. It is so awful to go through something like this. But eventually, this too passes and is just a part of history to remember and to write about.

Perhaps he has had a rough life and does not understand how a few words would comfort. Sadly I think you know the answer. He probably loves you in his way, but does not realise it is not enough.
