Re:

I know what you mean, TAPS. There are certain movies that it's always more fun to watch with someone else. Will this be his first time seeing it? Well, regardless, if you ever get the chance, then watch "The Little Princess" and determine if you could see Shirley Temple playing Dorothy . . .

Interesting post.
I'm ready to watch Wizard of Oz one more time.  I've got to get Grandson Phil over to watch it with me.  Watching him watch it is almost as much fun as watching the movie.

Re:

Actually, Carolyn, that is a pretty good claim to fame. I don't think many people can say that! And I'm glad you love "The Wizard of Oz," and are quite familiar with it. Now watch "The Little Princess" and try to imagine Shirley Temple playing Dorothy! It will boggle your mind . . .

Re:

See what I mean, Carolyn? I do like Tom Selleck, but I can't really imagine him in the role of Indiana Jones, just like I couldn't imagine Shirley Temple playing Dorothy Gale . . .

Re:

I knew that as well, FSI, as I responded to Annicita. Sometimes people win out certain roles over others, and sometimes people simply can't take on certain roles because of prior obligations or contract disputes. Either way, I have seen movies over the years where some people were terribly miscast, and simply did not fit the role or character they were playing! It is important to the overall 'feel' of the movie . . .

Re: Sometimes second choice

That's probably also true, Jeff, as television history has shown us. I was only able to list a couple of examples of this, but I know there are many, many more! That's why I said that the cast is probably as important as anything else when it comes to creating a masterpiece of a movie . . .

Re:

That's true, Annicita. I do remember reading that Buddy Ebsen ( of Barnaby Jones and The Beverly Hillbillies fame ) was the original Tin Man, but an allergic reaction to the silver body paint killed the role for him. No, I believe the final cast was perfect, and I still maintain that Shirley Temple would probably not have pulled off the role of Dorothy Gale as successfully as Judy Garland had . . .

Re:

Thanks, C C T. Sometimes I do like to make such comparisons. As far as movies in general are concerned, I ( and my wife ) are both big fans of those cinematic masterpieces made before 1960, especially in the '30's and '40's! Anything in black & white, in my opinion, is far superior to anything done today. Both movies were iconic and special for their day, and "The Wizard of Oz" has stood the 'test of time.' But when comparing the two actress's styles, I still say that Garland was the better choice for that particular role . . .

Re: JimmyA

That's true, Bill. Technically, Judy Garland was a minor too. But I think that, if Shirley Temple was available and had to audition for the role of Dorothy Gale side by side with Judy Garland, Garland would have won out anyway! At least I hope she would have . . . !

Re: Jimmy

Believe it or not, Naut, but you're only the second person I have ever known who has not seen "The Wizard of Oz" ( my late father-in-law was the other ). But you must have at least seen various scenes from it, or at least be aware of it! Well, if you ever get the chance, it really is a 'must see.' As for that other movie, only watch it after viewing "The Wizard of Oz" to make those comparisons, if you have a mind to. Or don't. Trust me. I believe my assessment is accurate . . .

That is some neat trivia that you got there...As I recall, Buddy Ebsen was supposed to be the Tin Man but was allergic to the makeup or something or the other.

Well we saw all those movies years ago Jimmy. Maybe it was on the tele. I just can't remember, but they were quite brilliant for the time and I expect you are right, you seem to have the gift of assessing the potential.

JThat led to casting, photos, bios, and auditions Jimmy. And know that a parent of an actress that’s a minor has to be present on the set. BC-A, Bill’s R®st
