Re: Justi
I could get used to having a few chickens around again. It was a part of my childhood.

Re: C_C_T
I love hearing a cock crow in the early morning, especially if it is off in the distance somewhere.

Re: Pat_B
After watching my mother kill, pluck, clean, and butcher chickens for years, I was very glad for someone else to process it.

Re:
It sure is easy to feed those nuggets to children who are picky eaters. And KFC extra crunchy is a fattening delight. KFC is probably from Tyson.

Re: Naut
I prefer to eat organic produce and whole grains and lentiles/beans, though I wouldn't turn down a visit to Gates BBQ.

Re: FSI
My preference for myself is organic produce and whole grains. But, I must admit I have eaten a lot of meat in my lifetime with my dad, husband and sons all meat lovers.

Re: T_S
I grew up in a family that raised chickens and eggs. It seemed natural to me at the time. Most of the clothes of my sisters and I were home-made out of cotton chicken-feed bags. At that time, hormones were not in the picture.

Re: JimmyA
Allergy to mold runs in our family. I don't think I would like to expose any of them to a bad reaction by serving the Quorn that they might think is chicken.

My wife and I have long known about the various 'chicken industries,' and how the chickens are treated ( or should I say mistreated ) on these farms and in these factories! And although it's tough for the people who purchase these chickens, as well as for the chickens themselves, this is one of those rare incidences that won't affect me at all, being married to a vegetarian! People should try the Quorn chicken substitute! It's wonderful, you can't tell the difference, and no chickens were harmed in the making of this product! Someday . . .

I am very leery about what is being put into our food nowadays...Raising our own food sounds like a wonderful idea.

I went and bought a copy of your Kansas City Star, Not...I looked it up on the 'net, LOL, and read the article, a critique of 'The Meat Racket.' Scary stuff, and I'm sure things are similar here, where they keep chickens in 'factories' under horrendous conditions. I still eat eggs, but virually no chicken these days...In fact, though I am not a vegetarian, I eat very little meat of any kind...

Sometimes I think my vegetarian son has the right idea.
We raised our own chickens when I was a kid. It can be a grubby job, and they have to be tended to, fed daily, cleaned up after. It's not a money saving idea if you raise fewer than a dozen, and fewer than six hens won't produce enough eggs for a family of four. There's a reason farmers used to go to town only once a week.

Well Taps when antibiotics first came on the scene we could buy meal i.e. chicken food dosed with the stuff. mind the chicks perked up almost immediately and I did hear of one person feeding it all the time. That was in the bad old days. The thing to look out for in small huts is red mite it is a job to see but it crawls along perches at night and sucks the chickens blood. In the old days we periodically would pull out the perches and dribble paraffin down them and then set them alight. Today there are mite killers. Everything new is a bit of fun and I am sure Phil would love watching the chicken, don't get a cockerel if you want to remain friendly with the neighbors.

It is disgusting how we have been taken advantage of through the foods we get today. Some years ago they began adding all the hormones to chickens, pigs, cattle and blame in on fast food. Our weight and many other issues are from these hormones, not overeating so much. We have friends who have free range chickens. I would if I lived in the right place.
