The early settlers were colorful, shall we say?  When the island was used as 'solitary confinement' for some prisoners, and they were fed the classic bread and water diet, that's when it got the nickname, Pinchgut.

What an Australian-sounding name for a place--Pinchgut Island.  Love it.
