Re: FormerStudentIntern.
The greatest writers seem to agree that most often, their characters tell them.

Re: CCT,
I think for most writers, their intent is to enchant the reader, to speak to both the linear logic of the Left Brain and the emotional logic of the Right. But some of us readers, we don't like to interrupt the simple, direct narrative of the story. I have to slow down and switch gears to read the poetry, and I can't always convince myself to do that more than once. As a kid I never liked the musical bits in movies. I just wanted them to get on with the story.
Different language? I just look at is as another extension of English.

I like how we writers have so much control over what we reveal to the reader.

Hi Ciel I suppose if one knows it is a dream and there is an art in inserting a different line of thought. I wonder if it for the Author's own pleasure that it is usually inserted. I hate to read poetry that has been pushed between the lines also. Sometimes library books have strange little bits of glob squashed between the pages. I prefer new or the electronic. How did you learn to speak in a different language. Very impressive.

Re: Pat,
Yes, that's a cheap laugh at the expense of the audience. Deus ex machina at least has some classic precedence.

Don't you hate it when you get to the end of a story and it
turns out the whole thing was a dream? It's such a cheesy tactic. I remember there was one whole season of Dallas - the one where Bobby had died, and it turned out to be Pam's dream. I was glad to have that character back in the story, but geezo-peezo it was a cheap trick.
