If that is the same as polymyalgia I have been taking steroids for a year and it is slowly burning itself out, but it is a painful experience. Yes you are right about the stick my B,I.L was doing the same until he was told at the hospital that it was the wrong hand, It must not be a very old discovery. Hope that you can get some relief.

I make canes and walking sticks too, for a hobby and I agree with Kabu. Use it how it works best.

Re:

I will try and ignore my ignore my inner ego and test out the cane when I go to a meeting tonight! And yes JimmyA Border Collies are the best.

I agree with Kabu. You should use your cane in whichever manner is the most comfortable, and practical, for you. And you should never feel self-conscious about it either! This is something that is aiding you with your physical struggles. Nowadays, it's really not all that uncommon! And it's nice that you have those border collies ( to me, the smartest dogs ever ). They'll be great company, even if it's just with you and not necessarily with each other . . .

use the cane that is of the most comfort and use to you. You have muliple difficulties with this horrible debilitating illness so you judt do your own thing.
