That's why I say, C C T, that not only was this incident barbaric, but it was totally unnecessary as well! You would have thought that we as a species would have moved on from such displays by now. Apparently not . . .

Yes it was bad publicity Jimmy and was bound to create a reaction. I really do sympathize with those who felt sad over this wretched affair,

Re:
I don't blame you, TAPS. And I hope such things aren't going on there at the K.C. Zoo, or any zoo for that matter! Unfortunately, not every incident of this nature is actually reported on. Who knows what's really going on behind the scenes at any of our zoos . . . ?

Re: JimmyA
I'm sorry to upset everyone with this, Sir Wiley, but I am writing 'from the observation deck,' and these are the types of things I observe! It's still amazes me sometimes that such goings-on still occur in this day and age . . .

Re:
It is terrible, isn't it, Kabu? And you're right . . . if the prevention of 'in-breeding' was their primary reason for killing this poor giraffe, there were other alternatives that they obviously chose to ignore! Like I wrote, the incident itself was one thing. But the fact that all those signatures of that petition ( including yours ) were completely ignored should be enough to get everyone riled . . .

Re: Jimmy
Probably not, Naut. As I wrote, I for one did not see any scientific value whatsoever in destroying a perfectly healthy giraffe, skinning and deboning it, and then feeding it to a bunch of lions, who, I'm sure, would rather be out in the jungle chasing down and hunting their prey on their own! No one looked at that side of it either . . .

Re:
It's difficult, FSI, but that's why I think 'barbaric' pretty much covers it! There might be valid excuses for 'putting down' an animal in captivity ( a life-threatening injury, for example ) but not as mere lion food! Bizarre . . .

Absolutely, Utah. There's really no other word for it, and no other way to describe it. I just can't see any of those kids some time in the near future extolling the virtues of having witnessed something like that . . .

Re: JimmyA
And as this shows, Bill, people still have no heart whatsoever when it comes to the treatments of certain animals over certain incidences. Our haphazard attitude toward nature in general is what's going to get us all in trouble in the long run . . .

Re:
Well, lovelylady, I certainly didn't mean to make you, or anybody, cry, but it's nice to know that there are people out there who do and would react that way upon hearing of such atrocities. Yes, it was an absolutely senseless killing, with no discernible reason behind it, as far as I could see! And I ( and my wife ) would also rather be in a room full of animals than most people . . .

I sure hope they don't do things like that at our Kansas City Zoo. I am a Friends of the Zoo member, but I wouldn't be if things like that were going on and I knew about it.

i did know about this and I did sign a FB petition that was obviously a waste of time and then after the deed was done i had to put it out of my mind. Surely they could have done the same thing to his man bits as what Mr, Graysome went through. not the best idea but at least the darling animal gets to live. I am so heartbroken by this.

I concur with you completely! I remember reading that story and it sickened me! This was supposed to increase children's 'scientific knowledge' of animals? That idiot wouldn't recognize science if it bit him in the ass...

I feel that you calling the killing of the giraffe "21st century barbarism" is spot on...Words cannot describe how awful the people are who came up with this idea and/or let it happen.

I want to throw up. I wish I still could. This is just so beyond cruel and disgusting and sickening. I can't even begin to describe how I feel after reading this. In the first place, I had no idea that a gun was used to euthanise that poor, beautiful little boy. Secondly, that zoo should be closed for allowing children to witness the feeding of his remains to the lions.
If you ask me, that zoo should be closed period. Zoos were created in the hopes that they would be able to protect and ultimately save the animals they were charged with caring for. Not for the purposes of killing them. Many of my friends went online to sign the petition to save him. What does it say about the staff of this zoo if they ignored the cries of the public?
The fact that they ignored offers from other zoos to take the animal in sums it up for me. What makes me sickest of all is the fact that they not only killed a completely healthy animal, they did so because, according to them, "His genes were imperfect and undesirable. He was put down to prevent the possibility of his inbreeding."
What an utter load of filth.
You are right, Jimmy. What does this teach children? It teaches them to be cruel and heartless and to kill just because a creature-and, God forbid, a fellow human being may be imperfect in some way. But, aren't we all?
I've said this countless times before, and sadly I feel the need to say it again. There are days when I hate people with a passion. Today is one of those days. Lock me in a room full of animals anytime.
Like I said in the beginning...I wish I could just throw up. But all I can do is cry.
