One of the things that I'd always remembered about Shirley Temple was that she was originally slated to play Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, but was under contract to another studio at the time. The producers actually didn't want Judy Garland because they thought she was 'too old' for the part. What a difference it all made to cinematic history! Yes, she was an icon who will be missed . . .
