Re: If a mouse ran over your strawberry, if a butterfly landed on it,

I guess what you don't know is the great qualifier Pat. The mice were biting the strawberries off at the stalks, I caught some in a trap but they were so cute I let them go again.

Re: Ciel

I know it is just fancy Ciel I would not have thought of it myself. Years ago my other brother made some moonshine from a bag of barley, he scooped rat droppings off the top mind it was pure spirit, I inadvertently was given a glass. The next day I felt that I had swallowed molten metal. Did you see in France the nob heads are pinching hydrangea flowers drying them for smokes.Austerity bites.

CCT

What a terrible story! But I'm sure those weren't blackberries - probably deadly nightshade (atropa belladonna)...

Oh just wash them..the stawberries. Or make pies. I bet your insides learnt to deal with way more than kids today for we had to eat what was about.

I think it was Will Rogers who said,

It ain't what I don't know that gets me into trouble, it's what what I know that just ain't so.

I've heard other tales of misidentification of herbs (foxglove for comfrey) and someone I knew actually identified correctly as an immature amanita somethingorother--a deadly mushroom--offered at the farmer's market as an edible puffball.  There are some chances I just don't take!

Crybe woke me the other night playing with a mouse she had caught, we live in a semi-rural area with many horse barns and chicken coops scattered about and in the winter the mice come in...Well not our house so much because of the cats, but still there she was mouse in mouth and still we pet her. I wonder what happened to that naked lady who now has no husband?

I can understand your reluctance to eat blueberry pie ( or blueberries in general ) after a tale like that, and it's really a shame. Of all the pies out there ( apple, pumpkin, lemon, strawberry, mince, cherry, etc. ) blueberry happens to be my absolute favorite! I've eaten dozens over the years, and I'm still here!  Many, many moons ago, I ate an egg salad sandwich consisting of eggs that had somehow gone bad, and got deathly sick! As a result, it would be years before I would even think about eating another egg salad sandwich! But the fear past, and now I would have no compunctions over eating one! That being said, I think you should give blueberry pie another chance! I promise you'll be okay, and no one will have to run naked down the street announcing your demise . . .

If a mouse ran over your strawberry, if a butterfly landed on it,

if earthworms tunneled alongside the roots, if a snake wound its way through the vines and flickered its tongue to catch the heavenly scent - all traces would disappear when the berry was washed under the faucet - and sunshine itself is a great purifier. In my days working the berry harvest at 5 cents a quart, I ate a few berries right out there in the field, brushed off the dust and munched - 60 years ago and none the worse for it.
