Re:

its fine if companies advance those being paid minimum but do they?

I don't think min. wage was meant to live on, these are the kind of jobs folks do to learn enough to be profitable for an employer to advance. I owned a business with 7 employees. Many times I went without pay so that they could be paid. When I pay them I must also pay their workers comp, match their federal contrabutions, and their health care. I paid 14 an hour...less for me, and if I would of been forced to raise my wages by  almost 3 dollars I would of had to let some folks go.

its been 4 years since there was a change

I agree. This is something that just needs to be done without debate or conflict. Of course that makes sense so the opposite will be followed.

Re:

you are so right and I think it depends on the job

It would be nice to see a minimum wage that is automatically tied into the cost of living rather than to see the politicians argue about it and raise it behind the times.

Re:

yes that is so true why work if the pay isnt there

A hundred years ago when I was a boy LL an old chap told me that the mill owners

expected to make twelve times the wage they paid each person.

Of course in those days if you did not work you went hungry.

My friend's old mother had 50p a week pension.

It is really a poor state of affairs when those who could work

are better off staying in bed.

Re:

you are so right do you know the CEO of Sears is a billionare from realestate and most his employees make minimum wage and the stores are biting the dust

This is one of those debates that people will be going back and forth over, because there seems to be pros & cons for both sides, most of which you've already stated. Various company CEO's will want to maintain whatever profit margain and lifestyle they're accustomed to, and apparently giving their workers more money will cut into that. How their conscious' let them sleep at night is beyond me. For someone who makes hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to tell an employee to live on minimum wage, with no increase in sight, is indecent at best! Not to sound overly pessimistic, but it seems the rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer, and I don't think Mr. Obama can do anything about it . . .

good post and i am proud to read someone standing up for the littlest folk.  Of course the big companies can ansorb a decent rise like this ...after all these are the people who will spend it back in their shops. Small bbusinesses may find it tougher but they will pass the costs along to the consumers. That is my experience anyway.
