My problem is with the dean's insistence, too.

Geez, have I walked into the middle of a controversy here?

Believe it or not, I do understand all of the view points involved. But it appears to me that there is yet another word in our society that has been a casualty of political correctness: prerogative.

Let's say, at the beginning of the semester, the instructor informed his students that one of the project requirements was for a class to be held on the beach. In that class might have been someone who simply abhors the beach. They greatly dislike the sand, don't care for the ocean, is completely turned off by the smells of fish and sea, and would rather do almost anything else but sit on the water's edge. If that person opted out of that requirement for those personal reasons, I would understand that too!

As a Free-Thinking Non-Conformist, I know how much I hate being forced to hear something I don't want to hear, watch something I don't want to watch, and associate with people I'd rather not associate with. Again, all this student was doing was exercising his prerogative. You can go ahead and argue that his thinking and actions are somewhat ridiculous, probably archaic, sexist, prejudicial, asinine, and even hurtful.

But it's still his prerogative!

And probably the only one he's really hurting is himself, because he is denying himself a complete education for some less-than-credible reasons. And I don't think his actions would send any aspect of equality in the opposite direction in any way, shape or form!

I've known for a long time that 'Freedom of Speech' was on life-support, because it seems that every time someone opens their mouth to give an opinion on something, their feet are held to the fire and they end up apologizing just for having thoughts contrary to others.

Is "Freedom of Choice' dying a slow death too?

I hope the Dean learns something from all of this--something that he should have learned before now.

I usually agree with our Jimmy A on almost everything but not on this one. If we women give one inch on equality, one teeny spec on what has been so hard won we are definitely heading for the dark ages.Maybe slowly, but for sure. It is only 100 years ago...less actually that women were still deemed silly little things with a mind not fit for politics or serious subjects. My first husband Naut told me that women don't have political opinions. They vote as their husband tells them...Imagine saying that to me in the 70's. No wonder he is a piece of toast!!!

Here's a thought. When Mo signed up to be a student at that institution, he also signed on to abide by the university's policies and procedures. Among them, I feel fairly confident, would be a clause or two about political correctness and equality under the law, etc., so Mo can either cut bait or go home, in my opinion. In fact, I believe it's against the law for educational institutions to discriminate on the basis of gender.
