I had a dog who went insane any time we tried to put her on a leash.
She'd get hysterical with the first pull against it. She did learn to respond to hand signals, and I could get her to come, sit or stay with them, so we didn't need a leash. I'm thinking Ben was happy when you went away with your camera and let him sleep.

He may be looking a little sad but me thinks that like our Mr. Graysome he really is one well cared for Rescue animal...much loved and wanted; but like humans who have been harmed they never completely recover.

I feel that your hypothesizes as to why he reacts the way he does to hockey playing and big dogs is correct.

Poor old Ben, but I expect he will soon forget when you are active again. Sadly there is very often problems with dogs rescued, well there are with normal dogs at times. A chap I know has a Golden retriever. Every time he takes it for walks it is OK until he turns to come back. The dog then just sits and will not move it has done that for years. He even got in touch with a so called dog psychiatrist. I would take a wheel barrow.
