a lovely post and I enjoyed every word.
I just popped in a rewrite today because I am deep into this danged editing which is actually a complete rewrite and a lot of work to get the pictures in. Some of them are so poor quality I am pulling out my hair....back to the salt mine...

A bit of a thankless task chopping ice out of gutters, I suppose one keeps warm working.
No sign of your squirrels, I expect they will rush back when the ice thaws. Funny sometimes we see things and think 'did I write that.' Saves a lot of time though, like reading a book we read years ago.

I've also thought that how we respond to nature defines humanity.
How the birds and squirrels think of us, whether they are grateful or just less hungry, and for less work, whether Nature cares, matters less than the fact that we do care.
