Perhaps the "Gardening Gods" will smile upon you one day, and those various birds will eventually feed upon those unruly caterpillars! Then you can forgo that spray, and everybody wins . . .

Re: Pat

Yes I can imagine Pat, It is nice that we can go back and watch her bring them into the house, although it is a bit sad, mothers did not have a lot going for them.

Re: Ciel

Good thinking Ciel.I did do that to my bird table as mice were climbing up at night only little voles, but it stopped their game. Yes one eats the leaves on these so it would be difficult I will make my report later. Yes I was half hoping the sweet peas would not germinate and I could have told my sister her present had been a failure, I like them but , well perhaps these will be heavily scented, we shall see.

Re: FS

It is always the case of win some and lose some FS. Of course we don't know what has happened before when we buy those washed veggies in the Supermarket.

Re: Naut

I am going out to investigate in a minute Naut, I had forgotten, but off I go. Frogs will eat slugs, I think moles like worms, but I am sure they would not turn a nose up at a fat slug. I thought that was why the silicone was used, you know more than me.

Re: Kabu

Yes the birds all appeared suddenly I wondered if people had not put food out as it was so wet and windy. Big babies.

Maybe you should get yourself a Mole or something else that eats grubs and such (I can't remember what moles eat, actually! The one in The Wind in the Willows drank wine, or was that Toad? I forget...) Anyway, it's so cold here these days, I'm sure there are plenty of blue tits around here as well...

Reading this reminds me how difficult gardening can be and all that goes into it.

ahhh the flowers are back but sounds like your plants are loved by all

This trick might be useful:

spread some petroleum jelly on the lower 3 inches or so of the stems of the nibbled plants.  Do beets have stems?  If they have enough stem to do this, that will discourage critters that come out of the soil at night.

I also love sweetpeas.  Maybe I can get some going this spring.

My mother used to raise sweet peas. She'd bring bunches of them

in from the garden where they grew up string "ladders" - they attracted a lot of bees. She had a couple pretty vases to hold them, milk glass and one that was Depression glass which reflected the light in metallic rainbows.
