Re: JimmyA
Thanks, Sir Wiley. I too have seen the various images of some of those concentration camps, but not, of course, in person. However, the photos and videos were enough. Yes, each camp had the air of death about it, which is primarily all they were. The fact that anyone survived them is somewhat astounding. As happy as I was for this woman to have finally found one of her rescuers, her story was still extremely sad . . .

I guess, Straight, that a 'double comment' can be similar to hitting the LIKE button, huh?

Re: I'd click the Like button on this story if it was on Facebook
To be perfectly honest, Straight, I personally believe that a story like this may be well above anything that is posted on Facebook! I could be wrong, but I just have this strange feeling that many Facebook users probably wouldn't appreciate it as much as others. Knowing what really took place during that terrible war helps tremendously . . .

Re:
Thanks, etfindicators. Glad you enjoyed it. There was a line in the original article that mentioned that someone picked her up and carried her to that field hospital, and I think they wanted you to believe that it was Mr. Barbella. But since it wasn't actually substantiated ( and the odds were probably very much against it ), I didn't write it that way, just in case. Still a great story though . . .

Re:
That's very true, C C T. I do recall seeing the news reels that were filmed immediately after the war which showed various German citizens being forced to walk through a few of the concentration camps to bear witness to what the regime that they supported had actually been doing to their fellow citizens whose only crime was being born into a different religion. Knowing as much as I do about that period in our history, I have nothing but praise for this woman to have survived it all, and know full well that she is deserving of every bit of happiness that comes her way, no matter how big or small . . .

Re:
That's very true, lustor. Years ago, I went through an extremely rough period in my life, and the mother of one of my friends kinda helped me through it by having me consider that, no matter what type of negatively that may be going on in your life, there will always be somebody worse off! I guess it's akin to 'counting your blessings' . . .

Re:
Thanks, TAPS. Usually, when I come across an article I'd like to share, it's just that much easier to simply copy it word for word, and then have a somewhat brief discussion about the topic afterward. But like I wrote, it was a rather lengthy article, and there were 'a few' rough spots I decided to gloss over ( it went into much more detail about the demise of her family that I didn't think was overly necessary to include ). But as long as everyone got the gist of the story, that's what was more important . . .

Re:
Probably the most ironic part, FSI, was that they were living together in the same town for years before discovering that connection. I wonder how many others in relatively similar situations are that close to each other and don't realize it . . .

Thanks, Naut. I think everyone needs to read something like this every once in a while, if for nothing else but to see that the human race hasn't completely lost its way . . .

Thanks, Kabu. They do seem to be rare these days! Although this woman had a very difficult past, I'm sure she is quite happy and content today. I wish I had more stories like this to post . . .

Absolutely, lovelylady. Although it took nearly a lifetime, at least she finally got her chance to fulfill that part of her quest. I hope they remain friends for the rest of their lives . . .

What a touching story! It took the lady nearly 70 years to thank someone that saved her life! I'm glad that you shared that!

Sadly there is a lot of cruelty in mankind Jimmy. Those old films of the camps should be shown as a reminder how even ordinary people can be brainwashed into committing acts that would have shamed them in a family's eyes. Poor Lady who knows what nightmares she has suffered. She fortunately looked for the good in life and she deserves her reward small though it be in comparison to her loss and her wretched suffering.
