Some very good comments here from you and everyone else.  It's not easy to be human and always do it right.

You have a concience...that puts you way ahead of a lot of the population...sometimes it is tough for a woman any way..yes a simple thank you would have been appropriate but sometimes we women have to be so careful and that is what we are used to, so it can make us a little cautious and unwilling to say anything to any male in the street.

Yes well I guess anyone would look nice to someone if they had been looking in a trash bin. That is a joke, I expect you looked fresh and clean, it may have been an automatic expression from the days when he was presentable. You can't hit the right buttons everytime, some would have been abusive towards him .

i think

that at one time or other in our lives we have all practiced hypocrisy. Sorry if I misspelled that word. I think it is one of the most important lessons we have to learn. Consider yourself a good student to have learned it. Now you can get on with the next lesson.  This rose is for you. I fully believe you have passed a test and derserve a rose.

On the surface it would appear that perhaps . . . perhaps . . . you were quick to judge, or at least automatically ascertain something in a negative light. I think we've all been in similar situations. I guess this gentleman proved that one could lose his home and his worldly possessions, but not his sense of decency in a simple act of kindness. I don't think you were necessarily being hypocritical. Just somewhat confused and overwhelmed by an unusual set of circumstances. People always talk about 'walking a mile in someone else's shoes.' I guess that only really works if the other person has shoes . . .
