I think it may a case of suck it and see Pat as you surmise if you think it is doing you good maybe it is. A man I knew always carried a conker in his pocket to prevent piles.
A woman swore by drinking a glass of wine vinegar at lunch it did keep the tartar off her teeth, but she still died of something else her hubby is still alive ten years later but I don't know if he still drinks the remedy.
