There was an English gent I knew, who was in local theater

in Olympia, WA, who wore the saddest, dirty old hat and coat, and some of us decided to give him new ones for Christmas, since he was too poor to even take his own to the cleaners. Only he wasn't. He just didn't. He was, in fact, quite well-set, he just didn't feel like he was. Nor was he the least bit shy about accepting charity from anyone, with both hands.

I relate thoroughly with your Christmas season poem!

Re:

Yes Taps just been invited to a tea party, I hope this isn't going to be a regular feature .

It is good of you to share a coat with an old friend who needs warming up.  Tea and crumpets would be nice too.  It would do you good to take a little breather from working all the time and let him bend your ear.  Eye-rolling smile

Re:FS

Brought up in hard times FS. That instinct to to be careful never goes. I wonder do you get any surprise tips at Christmas?

Re: Jimmy

I don't know how many extra folk died here last winter from the cold ,but it was many thousands. Evidently old folk do not realize they are cold as easily as youngsters do.No I don't go out at all on the last two days before Christmas Jimmy. I can't stand the emotional furore.

Re: Naut

Well Naut I shall tell him or his lady friend, platonic that he should get some long pants not that I wear them but I do have thermal lined trousers. I hope you have practiced smiling.

Wow!  I've been missing some beautiful flowers.
Now I am compelled to go back and read to see what else I've been missing.

You and Naut are just a couple of old Bah-Humbugs...or you pretend to be. I have not found one person in the street smiling and happy yet. Not one ...perhaps them being wrapped up like their parcels against the freeze could have something to do with the lack of cheery faces I suppose.

CCT

As far as Smokey Joe is concerned, the problem with being charitable is always the difficulty of preventing to make it look like charity...And I share your sense of ambivalence towards the Christmas season...

I suppose there's a difference between being 'frugal' and being 'miserly.' But no matter what, everyone should have a decent Winter coat! Hopefully your generosity will at least be appreciated, if not accepted. And I wouldn't worry about your "Christmas smile." If it can't come naturally . . .

The lovely flower at the top of this post makes me remember

winter's almost here and spring's not far behind. You know if you smile just right you can creep people out, which can be fun and might give you a real one.

My paternal grandfather was the same way when it came to spending money...It is interesting reading the thought process of the speaker in your poem, "Christmas Feeling."
