Re:

Well they are at a local village fair with a few horses Justi. My brother always went until last year.

He did tell me a ,little gypsy boy was cuddling a puppy and my brother asked if it was his. 'Yes,' he replied. My brother asked just to please him, 'you wouldn't sell it would you?' The little boy perked up and shouted 'Dad how much for the puppy?'

Re: CCT

Yes they actually told me my Weeping Ash tree was dead last spring and it needed to be removed. I said come back in three months if it is dead I'll give you twenty notes. No one returned, but I bet the chaps had a look. Poor girl what she has to suffer.

Re: Pat

Well Pat I would plant it in a pot that will allow you to take it with you, when you decide to move. I assume you will have it in as pot a Bay tree is nice but I don't know if it stands cold Winters. Dwarf conifers do OK in pots and you could get a good size one reasonably I would imagine.I try not to plant any tree too near the house unless in a pot the insurance companies don't like the idea.

CCT

It's kind of crafty going around saying the trees 'aren't safe' when it's the tree slasher himself who's the danger to the tree, LOL...And as always, Miss Wolfy Dunn is her usual, delightfully carnivorous self...

This was a neat post. I did not know you still had the Gypsies living as in the past with horses etc., This was a most interesting post. Thanks. Be blessed.

I'm thinking of buying a holly shrub or some other evergreen

to fit a gap to the right of the front steps. I'd go for a blue spruce if they didn't grow so large when they like a place. Something evergreen makes me feel at home.

Re:

No Jimmy these were a different family they are making them to sell for Christmas . The wreathes on the grave were expensive flower displays of cars and horses and elaborate messages.. No expense spared when one cannot spent the cash.

Re: Kabu

No, if they had come back again they would probably skin it. If I had asked them to cut it they would have probably charged £100. I don't think it would be very comfortable by the side of the road these days these days . Actually the gypsies round here were lucky the got into the scrap business after the war and are now more prosperous than a good many. They bought up a lot of land in the old cemetery and have quite a display of Angels etc.

Re: ChiffChaff

They only want about 5 inches of stem Bro. If they cut yours they would charge you and probably dump the branches in the nearest ditch. Such is life.

Re: FS

In my experience they are hack and slash merchants but it is safer for them to do it if the wires are in the way. I would give them a call.

Re:

Lo Adnohr, Even the gypsies seem less cunning than they used to be, perhaps it it easier for them in an affluent society. I think I will call my garden rotovator, Bud.

Re: Jay

Yes a shame to cut firs like that Jay I would rather thin them out.

Re:Bill

I have a preservation order on the Weeping Ash tree so that cannot be touched unless it catches the deadly virus that is destroying the ash trees.

I know what you mean, they came and and cut the tops off of our blue spruce trees that now end abruptly.

Lovely flowers, CCT. You were kind to them, but firm too. Because of that, I expect the tree will be safe until next year. I think Bud would be a great name for a tractor!

Speaking of which, I need some branches on my trees cut. I wonder when the electric company is coming on by...I enjoyed reading the exchange there.

ChiffChaff

I wish they would come and slash our evergreen hedge and make wreaths  out of them Bro.

I was told that Gypsies are buried by the side of the road...well maybe they were one time. You are very generous as we know but no don't let them ruin that beautiful Holly tree.

posted by Kabu on December 10, 2013 at 5:17 PM | link to this | reply

So I assume the gypsies were using the holly to make those wreathes. Interesting. Everyone has different customs and traditions, and I suppose there's a special meaning behind using holly specifically, although I can't imagine what that might be. Regardless, I'm sure they appreciated your generosity. And look at it this way: your tree helped to send someone off into the 'great beyond.' That's gotta count for something . . .

C.C.T.

YNo Miss Wolfy for the tree slashers that I’ve known where big trees were identified with neighborhoods. I know trees enhance homes not houses alone. And old trees in the center of town make a town an old established respected dignified community. This sentiment I share lovingly sir. Excellent. BC-A Bill’s R®st J
