Your general description of your town sounds very much like my neighborhood. Everyone is relatively friendly, but everyone pretty much keeps to themselves. However, I don't think I've ever seen anyone just "hanging out" in their garages, doors open or not! For the most part, it must be some kind of escape for these people! Either that, or they're just addicted to the smell of rust, dust, old oil and spilled gasoline . . .

Nautikos

And, they blast their radios Naut. For years I put them on and turned mine to rock and some country but on my patio. But I had a whole other real thing, going on in my rec room with seasonal décor for a hobby. I went public on December 10, 2003 that was the day that my mother passed away.   BC-A, Bill’s R®st

Goodness Naut I can't say I have noticed it here, most garages have been made into spare rooms.  Although in a way one can understand it, a kind of withdrawal from the stresses of life I don't know if females are involved if they are not, well I think it is a kind of instinctive gathering without causing too much aggro to her inside. Join the club.

escape

It is there place to escape, and it just so happens that that is where all the man stuff is.  Us men need a place to think our man thoughts without having to share them, and listen to mindless blather from now very much opinionated others. All the conveniences of home, we don't need much to find our peace. Cold beer, no Opra, no Dr. Phil, heaven on earth...

I have seen this on TV. I don't get it. Here a utility shed is used for same purpose. Could it be this is a disorganized under cover group with a place to be loose without hearing about it? They can be as messy as they want to be in their corner of the world.

I like the WHY questions!

Their are just shy. They want to get out of the house, but not so far as to be approached by neighbors and passers by...They probably have some good reefer in the back lol.

Well... all of those answers are good ones...  me?  I think any place in ones house can be one's "cave" , no particular reason needed.  My favorite place to hang out is the attic :-)  even before it was all fixed up I loved to escape and go there, ...actually I liked it better then, with the light streaming through dust covered windows and old things full of the memories of people that were no more scattered everywhere.  There was comfort in the disorder loll.   I used to go there when I just got married at the ripe age of 18 and sit on an old dilapidated sofa to read or write...it was my spot, my corner of the big old house that was now my home.  Perhaps your neighbors need to escape as well from manicured sitting rooms or crowded kitchens  Who knows ? and more over my friend...who cares?  as long as they are relaxed and happy :-)  xoxoxo

I myself have not come across those cave-dwellers.

Well there aren't many places where women haven't penetrated these days. Work place, taverns, pubs, clubs , and while the girls may be happy to chat and giggle in a coffee shop its all a bit refined for these blokes. They want to break wind and tell off stories and brag about sex..."Man Cave stuff." So instead of them leaving to go somewhere men only very difficult to find today...  and unless they can chat in the men's toilet...somewhere else that they can be safe from female intrusion...they have taken over the garage. Along with the snow blower you will probably find a bar fridge and the odd cigar...very trendy...and off language. as Pat says it is not really in the house so they can feel pretty relaxed and can let down their testosterone charged guard with their mates.

Naut..we have a cave dweller about 3 houses down from us...

He and his neighbour are always out there, usually with beer in hand, chatting away....about what? I haven't a clue....

I think it's part of a new 'burb trend, a kind of isolated man cave.

Some of the HGTV makeover shows have focused on man caves and "luxury" garages. I don't get it, but I do have a back-burner kind of impulse to change my own garage into a crafting studio. Weird, since I have the whole basement available for that as well as an extra bedroom. It's just that the garage isn't "house."  It's out, when I don't want to be in.
