No, I can't blame you, Kabu, for their answer! But it has got me thinkin'  . . .

Re: Re:

I did ask the Gnomes....and they sort of gave me an answer with a Question...

"Could you Live knowing the hole your home would be." now don't blame me....that was their answer.

Re:

And I don't think, mariss, that I would want to see! Before long, people will be selling body parts for quick cash, unless they're doing that already! Hey, if they're already selling their cemetery plots, could something like that be far behind? By the way, nice to see you back too . . .

Re:

That's probably true, Dr. JPT. I know many people are being forced to sell things they may not have necessarily thought of selling before, and I guess that includes burial plots. Still strange to see them listed like that! Welcome back, by the way . . .

Re: Jimmy

A decent idea, Naut, with just two flaws. First, I don't drink, so I would probably spend the money on something else. And second, in order to end up in Davy Jones' locker, I would first have to put out to sea, and me and the ocean aren't exactly simpatico . . .

See what the economy may have done to the sales ads!! No telling, what may be next.

I have not seen one. I think money is needed. A decision has been made to let beneficiary take care of arrangements or cremation. Many are changing their ways of thinking due to economic changes and conditions.

Re:

Really, Against? Actually, I think I can understand the "stacking" because of a lack of space, but how much might it actually take to keep a headstone preserved? And how many names would be on that headstone? Interesting . . .

Jimmy

Well, if you decide to go blowin' in the wind, or maybe go down to Davy Jones' locker, you may as well get the money and buy yourself some good scotch...

In some European countries, Norway, for instance, space is so scarce that people are buried on top of other people.  For a marked gravestone to be preserved, a living descendant or survivor of the deceased has to pay an annual or semi-regular fee.

Re: JimmyA

That's a wonderful offer, Sir Wiley, with just one hitch. Without any offspring, I'm not sure who you'd be collecting that rent from! And we don't plan on leaving our cats any money, so no luck there! Besides, they would probably just waste it all on catnip anyway . . .

JimmyA

Ain't gonna  happen but get yourself cremated and I'll sell ya a small box you can install in my plot on a rental basis. Kabu will collect the rent for her survival

Re:

I think I understand, TAPS, although I may need a scorecard to keep track of everybody in your scenario.  So far, it does seem that there would be valid reasons for someone to sell off their plot(s), and I honestly don't know how common that practice may actually be. Regardless, when you're in your local newspaper, scanning the For Sale section, filled with such items as barbecues, pool tables and baby strollers, to come across cemetery plot(s) for sale was just a bit bizarre and disturbing to me . . .

Re: I guess many folks are under pressure to sell what they don't immediately

It is indeed, Katray. I know there are real estate moguls out there who just love to buy cheap and resell for a huge profit. And I guess, technically, a cemetery plot is real estate! Sad, worrisome, and a bit creepy . . .

Re: JimmyA

That would be nice, Bill, for the buyer of course! However, I seriously doubt that you're going to find any cemetery plot(s) in the state of New Jersey for under $100! You should know that! And with property taxes being what they are today . . .

Re:

Are you sure you want to do that, Kabu? I mean, those gnomes have come up with some pretty bizarre thoughts and notions in the past! Then again, they may surprise you with some very thoughtful contributions. Ask if you must, then get back to me . . .

Re:

There are indeed, FSI. I'm sure the seller has a valid reason for selling their plot(s), and it's something that we'll never know. It was still strange to come across in the Merchandise For Sale section of a local newspaper . . .

Re:

I suppose so, C C T. I guess there may be any number of reasons for someone to "resell" their plot(s). It just seemed a little weird to me, especially tucked away between those other items for sale. It was a first for me . . .

Re:

Another possibility, lustor. Obviously, with cremation, a cemetery plot is basically pointless. People can change their minds about such things later in life, I suppose. It was still somewhat bizarre to see them advertised like that . . .

Re:

I suppose you're right, Sinome, but it's still somewhat difficult to view a cemetery plot as just another commodity that people can buy and sell at their whim. It's kinda like going to someone's garage sale and seeing their old underwear for sale. It just seems that some things should be considered a little too personal to be arbitrarily sold like that . . .

It doesn't seem strange to me at all.  Some people use the classified adds to sell things, some use eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/TWO-CEMETARY-PLOTS-WESTMORELAND-COUNTY-MEMORIAL-PARK-/330348368116?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cea4c10f4).  As to why--lots of people with burial plans and cemetery plots have decided to be cremated instead.  Why would they do that?  Take me for instance, in the early 1980's, my husband and I bought the whole thing so that our children wouldn't have to worry about it.  Later we were divorced and hubby moved to Florida and married again.  Since then he died and was buried here because his second wife was a widow who wants to be buried with her first husband.  But, even though she wants to be buried in FL with her first husband, she definitely does not want "that woman" (me) to be buried with her second husband.  The first wife (me) is not interested in that anyway.  So, I have a plot I will sell you.  LOL

I guess many folks are under pressure to sell what they don't immediately

need nowadays. I've read that when the masses feel the pinch of a bad economy and are having fire or "death" sales the rich have yet more opportunities to become even wealthier. So I suppose a rich person could snap up burial plots on the cheap and resell them for a profit when things get better....hmmm, cause and effect agendas...

That said, it's interesting in a sad, worrying way..

It’d be nice for someone if the two cemetery plots were listed under Items Under $100 Jimmy. BC-A, Bill’s R®t

can't say that i have seen anything like this my friend...I will have to ask the Gnomes what they think!!!

I myself have not seen an advertisement like that in the newspaper. Nothing that I have seen sticks out to me...You have me wondering what the story is with the seller. Some good suggestions thus far in the comments.

Perhaps they are emigrating, or the children have moved and they wish to be buried in a different location. Come to think of it though it would be quite a good investment, a lot of folk wish to be buried in cemeteries that are nearly full up. Or even to own a plot that ashes can be committed to for ever.

maybe they are really in need of money and will end up cremated

posted by Lanetay on November 13, 2013 at 10:06 AM | link to this | reply

Never ran into that but do know someone who sold his... He just decided to change his living will and be cremated instead of buried and now a days a cemetery plot is a big expense so he wanted to recoup his money.  Its amazing you found that ad where you did but I guess after all a plot is just another item one can get rid of.  Be well  xoxoxo
