Re: Jimmy....no, never....

I wouldn't think so, Rumor. Like I wrote, I'm well aware of the various age-ranges of most of the bloggers in here, and I believe we all grew up in a time when fathers ( and mothers ) maintained a certain amount of respect regardless of the circumstance or situation. You may have disagreed with them, you may have been angry with them, you may have even stormed out in a huff! But we would have never even imagined calling either one of them such a name! Sometimes I wish I could figure out what happened along the way with this younger generation . . .

Re:

That doesn't sound too bad, C C T. I mean, there are probably worse things that can happen between a father and his kid that would cause said kid to unleash a tirade of expletives! I believe, when I got a little older, I may have had an exchange or two with my dad, but there were never really any derogatory statements launched by either side. And of course there were no grudges either. Besides, your dad could have made you peel that banana yourself! Perhaps that was his way of "trying" . . .

Re:

I suppose you're right, lustor. There probably are a few souls out there who would not hesitate to take the name-calling to that extreme! As for me, and I'm sure many others in here, I would have had to have been feeling somewhat suicidal to even think of saying something like that to my father! Where has the respect gone . . . ?

Re:

As I think, Annitica, many of us were. Dad may not have always been right, but as head of the household, he didn't necessarily have to be! His word was law, and his belt was his gun and badge. Even meeting dad's glare could unleash his wrath, let alone calling him a nasty name! Boy, the times they have a-changed . . .

Re: Jimmy

It could be, Naut, like all of the movie violence desensitizing people to the actual violence transpiring around them. People see things like that on the big screen and suddenly think "Hey, maybe I can get away with something like that with my dad too!" Me, I would have learned the hard way, and the sting on my cheek would have lasted a month . . .

Re:

I didn't think so, FSI, especially after reading your posts over the years. I know you have an exceptional relationship with your dad, and I sincerely doubt he would do or say anything to you that may prompt such a reaction from you. But apparently there are others out there who would not hesitate to yell at or call their fathers names like that, and that doesn't bode well for the rest of us. Anyone who would disrespect their dads like that should probably be feared and avoided . . .

Re:

I'm glad you stopped where you did, Kabu, and I understand completely.  Even on those rare occasions when dad may have been totally wrong, or at least off-the-mark with his assessment of something, we would still not act or react in that manner, or call him anything derogatory. The respect was indeed there, but the fear was probably even greater. Dad swung a mighty belt . . .

Re: JimmyA

Thanks, Justi. I didn't think I would get too many people who would have had no fear whatsoever of talking to their fathers in that way, let alone call him something so despicable. No, our fathers ruled the household with an iron glove, and would never have excepted that kind of language or behavior at the dinner table ( or anywhere else, for that matter ). It's a shame that so many young people just don't feel that way anymore. I wonder what actually happened along the way, but I suppose that's a post for another day . . .

Re: Nope don't think I could

Yes, it is, WhiteHat, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I had my troubles with my dad growing up as well ( as I'm sure many of us did ) but the respect was always there, no matter what, coupled with a certain amount of fear. Remember, back in those days, dad could go off on you with his leather belt, and no one worried about someone calling Social Services on him. Spare the rod and spoil the child? Apparently that phrase has no meaning today . . .

Re:

I understand, lovelylady. Although that particular movie was probably the pinnacle of Mr. Travolta's career, it isn't for everyone. And yes, I believe that many of us from that generation would have definitely felt their father's wrath if we even looked cross-eyed at him, let alone called him something like that. Slap your face off? That would have been mild compared to what my father would have done . . .

Re:

It is indeed, Anna. I was actually born a little before you, and I believe the respect was even greater back then. It does seem to have, let's say, dissipated over the years. Sometimes I'm not sure which is worse . . . the way some kids talk about their parents behinds their backs, or what they say to their faces. Either way, a lot has changed over time, and seemingly not for the better . . .

No I would never have forgived myself although to be honest we did swear at each other at times, but never held a grudge. Example once I was driving home after a hard days graft, He asked do you want a bananna. I said 'Yes' and he handed it to me pealed. It made me swear. Poor old Dad.

Jimmy

I certainly couldn't! But it's scenes like that in Saturday Night Fever that have made it possible and acceptable...

Like you, I would not be sitting here right now were I to have called my father an asshole. Therefore, I cannot imagine doing that either.

well No. I loved and respected all my elders especially my parents.Actually I had a healthy respect for Dad...it was healthier for me to give him respect. LOL..and I never neglected my parents, never tried to upset them, remained a virgin until married because of that love and respect than for any other higher .....I'll leave that alone I think.

JimmyA

I cannot imagine getting into a heated argument with anyone at the dinner table. If I used such language in front of my father whether calling him that or not I would have been in fear for my life, not that he would have taken it but I didn't know that. Good post.

Nope don't think I could

I did say that I hated him one time.  But that was long ago.  Kids disrespecting adults is all the rage these days.  I never thought I would be saying stuff like this, but it is simply out of hand.

No, I can't, Jimmy.  In the first place, because it is VERY disrespectful to do so, and secondly, if I ever had, he would have slapped my face off.  I've never watched that movie and I have no intention of ever doing so.  Though I quite like Mr. Travolta now.

Oh my goodness no. I have never and would never call my father that...esp to his face. Of course, I was born in 80. Kids now a days don't think twice. I was raised the good old fashioned way...to show respect. Alot of the kids now have so little respect. It's sad.
