One should have to learn the basics at least for how can one understand figures if one doesn't sweat the hard stuff a bit.

Wow, you've really touched on a topic here that I could go on and on about! Yes, when I was in school, if you got caught bringing a calculator into math class, you would be tarred and feathered! Years later, it basically became a requirement! But now the pendulum has swung in the complete opposite direction, and most of today's kids couldn't do a lick of math with a pencil and a piece of paper, let alone figure out anything in their heads! What a ridiculous society we're living in . . .
