Since it seems to be a defect even though it is out warranty, and could have caused your house to catch fire and cause them a large law suit, they may think it better to replace that unit for you.

The part I couldn't help but be somewhat amused at was the fact that, whether it was GE or anyone else, you actually thought that they were going to manufacture a product . . . any product . . . that would actually last for years and years! Not these days! They want things to fall apart as quickly as possible, that ol' "planned obsolescence" we hear about from time to time. I really hope they help you, and not give you the "run-around," going back and forth between e-mails . . .
