Yes, "lightning storm" is probably more accurate than "thunderstorm." But remember, you can't have thunder without lightning! And personally, I'd rather have the thunder than the lightning . . .

I suppose Thunder makes a loud scary noise but the danger is in the lightning, so to me a lightning storm seems the better terminology.

In Maryland, we use the term "lightning storm" when there is lightning but no thunder is heard or rain present. Reading your entry, I feel thatlightning storm makes sense when all three are present.
