I've used other lanes than the express with few items but you've got to know the cashier or you'll go into returns. Lol. I'll try t paste your comment like I thought later last week in an appropriate box like they do in magazine features. However until I travel over to another public computer in another location the post;'s a mess right now. I have a lot more work to do on it. I hope that you'll drop by again and see it when it's finished. Thank you for the complement.

My problem is that I do not assess the lanes accurately. I think one will go faster, so I will step into it, only to find that another lane is moving faster. About half the time or more, I will stubbornly stay in my slower lane, hoping that it will speed up.

I go for groceries at non-peak hours whenever possible, like just after they open early in the morning, or just before closing at 9:30 PM. Usually have no problem finding an empty cash.

I just stand and look miserable and hey presto another till opens, I think the manageress
sees me in her camera and thinks that's the old misery who said we would lose trade if we kept customers hanging about.

In my experiences, I've noticed that it really doesn't matter which line I'm actually in. It will be the slowest moving one, no matter what, whether I have 10 items or 110 items! Isn't that part of Murphy's Law . . . ?
