Re:
That's actually good, mariss! A lot of people have many hang-ups over little things that probably don't really amount to much. I have a feeling that, if you were really, really hungry, black meatloaf, purple peas and orange mashed potatoes would seem like a feast indeed . . .

I could without caring very much, but I am different at times and do not care about small things, even like a good joke on occaision.

Re:
I don't blame you, C C T. That seems to be the general consensus amongst most folks. I don't mind trying new things, but leave the original colors alone! Besides, who knows what's in those food coloring dyes anyway . . .

Well I don't like colours as dyes very much Jimmy so I would be a bad subject to submit to your suggestion.

You're not being rude, Sir Wiley! Just brutally honest, and there's nothing wrong with that! I think, for the most part, people like what they're used to, and don't like others messin' with it! Perfectly understandable . . .

I think you are on to something. Food has a fahion life like clothing. And what sells is what they do.

I used to...no, I like to separate them into their color groups. I eat the green ones first and save the brown ones for last. They might taste the same, but they don't eat the same.

Re: Jimmy
That's very true, Naut. Thus the experiment! The visual and psychological connection to our food is indeed astounding! And for the record, I don't think I would have worried about the meatloaf either, in any color . . .

I don't like meatloaf of any colour, LOL! As to the peas and smashed potatoes, I will admit that strange colours might be a bit of a turn-off. But any good chef knows that a dish's presentation makes a huge difference in the way it's being judged by the customer, whether it's 'delicious' or not...

Re:
It's pretty amazing, isn't it, lustor? A simple, harmless change in the color, and most people are automatically turned off! I guess those professors were really onto something . . .

Re:
Really, Dr JPT? Not even a sample? You could always pretend that those orange mashed potatoes were actually yams ( distinctly orange ), the peas were blueberries ( I don't know too many people who don't like blueberries ), and the meatloaf was . . . well, that is a tough one! You know what? You're right! Screw it! Bring me something else . . .

Re:
I suppose, MsJudy, if you closed your eyes and maybe held your breath, you may have been able to choke down even the meatloaf! I too would have at least tried it . . .

Re:
I believe, Kabu, that that's what most people would have felt. There probably is something inherently psychological when it comes to how our food is presented to us. If someone put something in front of me that looked like dog puke, but told me it tastes exactly like peach cobbler, you know I still wouldn't eat it . . . !

Re:
I don't think you're alone, adnohr. As for me, I may have at least tried a bite of each food item, but it would have been difficult to swallow. And who knows? Perhaps the experiment would have had an entirely different outcome if they had used children instead of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and peas . . .

Re:
See, FSI? It is partly psychological, and partly what you are used to. Sometimes the color, and possibly the shape, of the food can make all the difference . . .

I sat and thought about this question...I would certainly try it...after all as a nurse they often gave us a free meal...HOSPITAL FOOD!!!! and as a girl I went to b oarding school where you had to eat everything that was put in front of you at meal times!!! but even knowing the food was the same i think that I would only pick at it....My mind would be telling me it must be bad, it looks bad.

I wonder if they tried the same experiment with children as participants (as eaters, not the meal
)? It comes again to what we are used to. My Japanese daughter in law will eat things that don't really look appetizing to me, but she loves it. And yes - there are grey and orange things in her choices. Personally?? Nope!

I myself could not eat food that was a different color even if I knew that it was only just harmless food coloring...Reading this entry reminds me of when there was a company (maybe Heinz) that sold different colored ketchup. Pruple and green ketchup did not do it for me...
