He was not my boss and could not do what secretaries were paid to do or teachers because my job was administrator as his.

Exactly! In this case I think it had more to do with male chauvinism than anything else. This man strutted around like a peacock, had to have his back against the wall and would belittle males openly in staff meetings. He was awful.

I like your sense of humor. You verify my Dad saying, hear what you want to hear.

Some will drive one to habits to avoid doing something that will truly mess up your life. I am so proud of you. I always say it is never too late for change. I live it and believe it. You are a true testimony.

It was how he said it and in front of whom. He did not understand that a principal and assistant principal are similar to a father and mother over a school in the same way a husband and wife are partners. Equal authority exists. This man felt as though he was a one man leader and that I was among the crew as his servant or personal assistant. You are absolutely right.

I do my best, some are more difficult than others depending on role and place in hierarchy. Both of were administrators.

The extension to this man's hand was his secretary, not me. I was a school administrator not a principals lackey. I do understand what you mean by an employee. I was under the superintendent as he. He was not my boss.

He would as me to do the job of teachers, clerks and secretaries. As assistant principal, my dignity and self respect would not allow me to be demeaned more than once. I will do anything once, but will not repeat.

This person did get his jollies pushing others around. As assistant principal, I was co-captain, he had no right to boss me. Leading and bossing are two different issues. I agree with you.

White rebellion. If I am treated like an idiot I will behave as one for a while and do nothing that they didn't tell me to do

I say "Ok" and move on to my instructions.. I am not paid to think, as said below - I am only an extension and try my best to do as I am expected as fast as possible and quitting time is quitting time..

As in so many cases, here too it's often a matter not so much of what is being said, but how it is being said...

I once had to explain to an employee, No, i don't want you to think--
I want you to do what I need done.
An employee is, in a sense, an extension of the employer's hands. Of course, it does depend on the job. Some jobs, initiative and creative thinking are just the ticket. Other times... you really truly just need the damned lightbulb replaced, and asap.

I don't think he was necessarily treating you like an "idioit," as much as it seemed he was treating you as if you were a four-year-old! Yeah, some people let what little power they actually have go to their heads, and perhaps it made him feel somewhat better to be able to boss someone else around. I wouldn't have worried about it . . .

I try to do as I am asked by superiors so long as the request is ethical. Some supervisors get their "jollies" by shoving people around I think.
