there are some pretty good suggestions here, I think I'd add to them with having your child trained in some form of martial art and encourage them to stay fit. If they can rely on themselves to get away from attackers then they have a great last line of defense

I think the relationship with the teenager and the parent needs addressing so that value systems are in place to teach and learn respect for self and others. In so doing, one can lean to function in groups and other places without the need to get angry, then kill self or others. The breakdown of families is a problem.

Fortunately, I live in an area where murders and similar such tragedies happen rarely. Still, it is a good measure for people to take precautions where they can.

Perhaps smaller groups to each Teacher and all should be known not strangers.
