Re:
You and me both, mariss! But no matter what, along the way, it was always nice to have someone there to assist you, wasn't it? I know I would have been lost without my guru . . .

Dell, different jobs, and various ones that were willing to assist at different times. There are still volumes I could learn.

Actually, Blue feathers, I think we all are still learning, as everything is constantly changed and up-dated, almost on a daily basis it seems! But, that "computer guru" always comes in handy . . .

Well I had a word processor and staggered onto a computer paying at times to people who rarely knew what they were doing or those who did tried to rip one off. I think I relied on Go Back mostly until my brother got serious and learned how to build them.

My brother helped me a little. Most of mine was trial and error and error AND I am still learning.

Re: B.A.S.I.C.
The only trouble with that, Lost, is that if your computer goes down for any reason, Google won't be much help! Unless, of course, you can "borrow" someone else's computer . . .

I guess, Utah, that falls under that generational situation where the youth has to come to the aid of the elders, and not the other way around . . .

Well, lustor, in a way your daughter can be considered your guru. At least you have her to turn to if you become stuck with something computer-related, right? That's better than nothing . . .

Re:
I think I understand, Dr JPT. But then again, isn't it kinda nice to be able to pass on your knowledge and experience to others, and at least give them a foothold in starting out themselves? And how you were able to figure out and master data processing while surrounded by farm animals is beyond me . . .

Nor do I, TAPS, with or without the aid of a "guru!" The entire cyber and computer world is extremely vast indeed, and I sincerely doubt that there is anyone out there who could possibly know everything about everything! But, we forge ahead . . .

Re: JimmyA
It sounds, Sir Wiley, like you had to go about it the hard way: lots of do-it-yourself motions combined with chats with perfect strangers! And it seems we have much more in common than I thought! I was in and out of darkrooms and worked with litho cameras for many, many moons! It's a shame sometimes that much of modern technology has done away with the need for much of those "ancient" ways of creating certain graphics. It's more efficient in a lot of ways, but a shame nonetheless . . .

I can see that too, Kabu. And it's especially nice when your guru is almost always at arm's length! My former co-worker got me started, but for me now it's my wife. She was on computers long before I touched my first mouse . . .

I'm not sure I fully understand, Saif. Someone had to physically set you up and show you the ropes as far as computers are concerned! Personally, I'd wish to see them too . . .

All shapes and sizes, Naut! Your situation kinda reminds me of a quote I had heard a long time ago: "Every man is my superior in that I may learn from him." When it comes time to pass on knowledge and experience to the next person, the "teacher" could be anyone . . .

I am always atypical and different! My Dad was a forward thinker and decided to get a typewriter for me when I was in 5th grade. It came with a manual. I taught myself to type. Later in high school, I mastered that. When I found mysel in college, I landed in a data processing class and did not understand what the heck that meant for I was transplanted from the city to the woods and found myself around farm animals. So, I learned that. Then I found myself in the Registrar's office at the University of Florida, first as a clerk typist, then supervising a department that had networking with many connecting computers. So, I had to pull out books. My round about answer, I had to read and figure out my way via trial and error! It would have been nice to have a friend or mentor to help. This is why so many lean on me and I don't like because I had to work hard much and most of my life.

The 'Duumy' books helped me and all my telephone calls to Dell and Microsoft helped fill me out.Free for the first year. Before that I was in the graphic arts trade installing litho cameras and darkrooms in print shop.

My very first one was....get this...Mohammed! LOL! There were a couple that came later. He was a nice guy, a Pakistani, but he moved away, and we haven't kept in touch. I have no idea where he is now...Oh, and that was before I had begun to study Islam...

I had been an administrator for so long with employees to do my computer work that when it all ended I needed to 'recycle' my talents. I went back to night school and took courses to learn the computer, so had many 'gurus'. One I particularly remember, because she was a pearl and her birthday was on the same day as mine, is Brigitte. Not only did she know her stuff, but she admitted that she got up earlier every morning to sit alone with her doggie, before hubby got up, drank her coffee while saying "Thank You for a new day"...we clicked! She was a smiley lady.
