You're absolutely right, mariss! Like I wrote, years ago I may have succumbed to such "peer pressure." But like anything else, when you weigh the cons against the pros, my liver, brain cells and belly are indeed much more important . . .

Let them drink without you. Your liver will thank you and your brain cells! Not to mention you will be more likely to be lighter weight without a beer belly between that and a Meditteranean diet.

Re: JimmyA
I'm well aware of that, Sir Wiley, and I'm quite certain you're extremely grateful that those days are over! When I was in my late teens and still succumbing to "peer pressure," I may have had that third or fourth beer, but eventually realized that the drunken antics, hangovers and everything else attached to heavy drinking just wasn't worth it! And hard liquor? Forget about it! I'll just have a glass of iced tea, thank you very much . . .

Re:
I suppose, TAPS, to certain people at certain times, "weight" could sound like somewhat of a nasty insult! Like I wrote, I just shrugged it off! There wasn't anything anyone could say or call me that would make me suddenly want to drink excess amounts of beer . . .

Re:
I can't blame you, MsJudy. Yes, yet another down side to drinking too much is losing control. I don't mind feeling "comfortably numb," but I don't like the lack of control or that feeling of vulnerability because I had too much to drink. There is a happy medium . . .

Well, Annicita, I think I'd rather be called a wussie than a drunkard, a beer-bellied slob, or that guy who has to walk everywhere because he lost his license because of multiple DUI's . . .

JimmyA..I understand very well..I feel the alcohol in my veins after 2 sips! They used to call me the cheap drunk, 2 sips and I'm feeling it..I don't like the way it makes me feel, so I don't drink at all anymore.

Thanks, Blue feathers. Fortunately, this is not my general circle of friends, they are my cousin's friends that I only see once every couple of years! My friends accepted the fact that I don't really drink a long time ago! And of course, they don't mind! It means they can get as wasted as they want because they know they have an automatic designated driver . . .

Re:
And that's fine, Kabu. People can save themselves a lot of headaches and heartaches if they just learned a little self-control. Some people might see a glass of wine with dinner as fine, while others might feel compelled to drink the whole bottle! See? Those hangovers and sick days just weren't worth it, were they?

Thanks, Utah. I'm so glad that, over the years, I've been able to "thicken my skin," as it were, and let such comments and monikers roll off of me. Peer pressure is one thing, but self-control and a degree of nonconformity can save you a lot of headaches down the road . . .

Thanks, Lost. There are plenty of "social drinkers" who sometimes go over the line a bit, but they usually end up paying for it the next day, in one form or another. For me, it simply is not worth it . . .

I believe that, adnohr, is what we might refer to as the other side of the spectrum! Hey, I know plenty of people who like their screwdrivers or whisky sours or 7&7's or Tequila or what have you, can get "comfortably numb," but still maintain. To me, there's a vast difference between getting a "nice buzz" and getting "sloppy drunk!" And most beer drinkers end up getting sloppy drunk! Except, of course, light-weights like me . . .

Re: Jimmy
I understand completely, Mia. As long as those nicknames weren't overly personal or hurtful, people could call me whatever they wanted, especially if it was born out of my unwillingness to do something just because everyone else was doing it. It took some time and some doing, but once I established myself as a Free-Thinking Non-Conformist, nobody could get me to do anything I absolutely did not want to do, regardless! If you wanted to get plastered and fall down drunk, fine, knock yourself out! I'll be the sober one you'll need to drive you home . . .

Re: Jimmy
Well, Naut, 7 out of 9 isn't bad ( I think I have the math right ). I actually do remember the last time I was "hungover," many, many moons ago. I wasted an entire Sunday recuperating, and the headaches and nausea were just not worth it! And I never really worried about a "beer belly" simply because I never really drank all that much beer to begin with . . .

Re:
And like I wrote, FSI, being called light-weight or weight didn't and doesn't bother me in the slightest, for two reasons. First, it's based on my common sense approach to drinking and NOT getting drunk, and two, I think there's a lot worse things people can call you . . .

Re: Jimmy....
I certainly hope so, Rumor! The one thing my circle of friends loved the most about my unwillingness to "get wasted" is that they automatically had a designated driver! I put a lot of extra miles on my cars over the years carting people from bar or party to home. If I had been a cab . . .

I have a feeling, lustor, that "beer guzzlers" come in all shapes and sizes, and nationalities! In fact, I've known a few All-American, Anglo-Saxon white girls who could guzzle that beer with the best of 'em! Of course, they all eventually ended up looking perpetually pregnant, but that was their choice . . .

Re:
I suppose we are, Dr JPT. Thirty-five years ago I may have succumbed to the typical "peer pressure" many of us face, and had that second ( or third ) beer. Now, there's no way, and that's why I wrote that I couldn't care less what moniker you apply to me. About 25 years ago I learned to be extremely pragmatic, and became what I refer to as a Free-Thinking Non-Conformist. I don't do anything simply because everyone else is doing it! I weigh the pros & cons, and use simple logic! And drinking a lot of beer, at least to me, is definitely a "con" . . .

I am with you....don't drink and drive but I did actually over do the beveage thing twice years ago at different times. Trouble was, I was sick for two days after both times and never ever want to feel like that again. Ugh!!! I enjoy a nice wine with a meal really is all.

LOL - I'm in Naut's group. I enjoy my Tequila binges with my friend, Suzie, and cheerfuly endure the hangover that comes from it. However, I've never had a problem with it either, and feel that if someone doesn't like to drink, it's perfectly okay! (if anyone tries calling me a 'heavy-weight', that would be another matter!)

I'm also not much of a drinker - I may have half a glass every 5 or 6 months, but that's more than enough for me! And I won't even get started on the nicknames I've been given

Well, I’ve been known to imbibe, LOL.
But ya know what? I’ve never been pulled over for drinking and driving! I’ve never had a DUI, never lost my license for drunk driving, never did jail time or community service for driving while intoxicated! I’ve never been in an alcohol-related accident nor an alcohol-related bar fight, and I never had to apologize to a bunch of people the next day for my drunken antics of the night before! I have had to deal with hangovers, but my gut hasn’t swelled to the size of a medicine ball...!

This is where I am but unlike you my refusal to be a gutter person gives me the label of an outcast. Maybe it is the male/female socialization syndrome and the majority of my relatives and friends are confused as to whether they are male or female. Females tend to include in their circles only those like them while males prefer those who are opposite and will allow stand alones.
You life reflects your character and that is wonderful. I see and know why I enjoy your writings. We are kindred spirit.
