Except...if one believes, it is no longer a myth for that person, is it?

Your definition of the word myth makes a lot of sense to me.

You are correct.  I have found that conflict occurs over word usage due to misunderstanding, that has a lot to do culture and assuming a meaning.  I am frequently into it with my husband because of our schooling, gender, city/rural, parenting and friends.  Generalizing and assuming a word means other as defined in a dictionary causes problems.

Because I moved from the suburbs to a rural area, I went from a person who spoke their mind all the time to one who sat quietly to let others speak.  It was assumed that I was shy.  I became quiet because I did not understand the rural language after learning to speak standard English. There is a difference. To this day, I make no comment if I do not understand, especially after defining the word that boggled my mind.  Good explanation. I don't remember much about Greek mythology now other than Venus!

I'm with you so far, and wondering how (or if) you'll deal with this one sentence in particular:

"...a myth will not persist if becomes irrelevant, for example if a ‘better’ explanation is accepted or if an explanation becomes altogether unnecessary."

I bet you can guess why I singled out that one statement...
