It's many years since I read that - maybe I should dig it out again, but I'm having a hard time whittling down my 'must read' list, which keeps growing faster than I can get it down, LOL. By the way, I never watched the series, maybe I should have...

Re: Annicita,
I have to wonder what about William Adams struck you as idiotic. I have done a little research which certainly shows him less dramatically than Clavell's Blackthorne, but he did certainly make a substantial contribution to Japanese/English and Dutch relations.
I have written haiku from time to time. I have never tried tanka... Tanka for telling me about it.

try writing poetry in some of their styles like a haiku or tanka....
shogun was one of my fave miniseries...do you that the actual english captain was more like an idiot? I found that out when doing research on the samurai
there was a movie about an american who falls in love with a japanese performance artist....I really liked that movie but can't find the title for you

Re: FormerStudentIntern.
I recommend both, in this case. The acting was wonderful, and the script remained true to the book, just not as detailed.

I too enjoy reading the book as opposed to watching the movie or the television series.

It's been a long, long time since I read that book, but it made quite an impact on me.
