You see, there is a Gremlin from the clock makers old shop that he sneekily
inserted into the clock. He is there to steal those 5 bongs at 9.00pm.

I'd consider the discrepancy a kind of "Hi, how are ya?" from the
clock's original owner, a little tap on the shoulder from the great beyond. It's much cooler to have it this way than boring so-called perfection.

So now 9:00 pm has become the "witching hour" for you! Think of it this way . . . I think I would rather lose 5 bongs as opposed to gaining 5 bongs! With that, you would really go nuts trying to figure out what time it was based on the bongs . . .

Or, at least that's what I've been told. Maybe the clock knows this, and doesn't want to disturb your program with a full 9 chimes.
I used to have a clock that made noise. Every 15 minutes the thing sang, and it chimed on the hour. Darn thing drove me insane, so I donated it to charity.
