Re: CCT,

I lived 50 miles from Mt St Helens, when that one erupted in 1980.  Been there, done that...  but the first or second night I was out here with my RV, we felt a little earthquake.

Wel Ciel lately folk have had to contend with flooding  not life threatening but terribly devastating because it means one is hardly likely to sell ones house if it turns out to be in a flood plain. Probably if one has a nice safe little nest it would pay to think hard before moving. Hope your mountain does not turn out to be a volcano.

Re: Re: JimmyA,

I really wish there were, Ciel. We have an apple tree and a cherry tree with thin trunks, and they are anchored with poles and rope. But the bulk of the rest of the trees are huge evergreens! One of the things we have discovered is that evergreens have notoriously short and shallow roots, and are easily toppled by decent-strengthed winds combined with a saturated ground! Trying to actually anchor them all would probably be an unbelievably monumental, and possibly impractical, task! Probably all we can do at this point is pray that we never have to deal with a Sandy ever again . . .

Re: Annicita,

Sadly, we don't do what we need to survive until it's too late for someone.  We could... but we don't. Human nature.

every part of the country has its disaster....floods from high snow fall, lava and earthquakes from mountains, tornadoes and hurricanes....but one thing i noticed...we are a resourceful and forgiving country....we do what we need to do to help and survive!

Re: JimmyA,

If we could live on the Moon or Mars, then we can for sure arrange what we need to, to live on Earth!

Thinking more about your trees, and other big trees, I am wondering if there is a way of anchoring them, to withstand big winds.

As we've all come to learn, Mother Nature can be extremely unpredictable, and as you've said, the best we can do is to be as prepared as possible for any eventual devastation. In the past, we never had to worry too much about extreme weather over here in Jersey, but that was before Sandy! Now it's all we can do to assume that something of that magnitude could happen again ( although, of course, I'm hoping against it ). And since there are no colonies on Mars or the moon to relocate to yet . . .

Re:Kabu,

Thanks so much!

Yeah, I think most people expect God to do and be things that It doesn't and isn't.

Ciel

You make some excellent points, and they remind me how lucky we are! Were we live, on the north shore of Lake Ontario, there are no volcanoes, we never get tornadoes, and the last hurricane reached us in '54! Her name was Hazel, and people are still talking about her...We don't even get much snow here, certainly a lot less than they get on the south shore of the Lake, in the state of New York...

I love reading your posts. You have wonderful expression and insight

I love your thinking. I know we people are great at building in dangerous places and then when disaster happens, blaming it all on God.

Re: Mia,

Calgary!  one of my favorite towns!  Oh yes, that's a fine point of irony, the number of people who know just what to do in event of zombies.

Re: TAPS,

It has been said that a requirement for happiness and sanity is an irrational optimism. I figure we've got help, sometimes, else the human race would not have lasted this long.

Great Post!

I've never had to deal with a major natural disaster. If we ever had a tornado in Calgary, we'd be in BIG trouble - no one here is prepared for anything (except the zombie apocalypse, of course...)

Good post.  It is easy to think, "It can't happen to me."
