Re:
Absolutely, sam. And yes, inundating us with commercials on the DVD's as well is just another form of intrusion, as far as I'm concerned! And to make it worse, they usually don't allow you to fast-forward through them either! Scoundrals! Will it never end?

Re:
I have a feeling, DR JPT, that I may have written what was on almost everyone's mind! I have yet to come across anyone who says that they either actually enjoy the commercials, or simply don't mind them! Yes, they have become a nuisance to us all . . .

That's true, Kabu. You would think that, by now, the powers-that-be wouldn't do anything to alienate their audience. Instead, they do the opposite! No room for common sense, I guess . . .

You're lucky, Against. There are still several programs that I actually don't mind watching on regular TV, but for those damned commercials! I must skip them all . . .

I find commercials to be very annoying! It grinds me when I go to watch a video and have to put up with them, too! They are like you say... bullshit...

I avoid commercials by watching Netflix. I don't have regular television reception.

Gosh, Jimmy...
I honestly can't remember the last time I saw an ad - I only watch 2 shows (The Big Bang Theory and The Walking Dead), and we always PVR them so we can skip the ads (and also because I don't like having to watch TV at a specific time...).
Great post!

Re:
That's a good idea too, mariss. Better to be "constructive" than irritated! But you're right. Why should I sit through a commercial for a Cadillac or a world cruise or a gold watch, knowing that I will probably never have the means to purchase them! Not only is that annoying, but it can be disheartening as well . . .

As much as I hate those ads in general, Utah, you may be right about some of them actually being better than the programs they're advertising on! Overall, TV has really taken a downhill turn as of late! That's why I am so thankful for DVD's . . .

Re: JimmyA
Well, believe it or not, Sir Wiley, they do have newly written shows out there, but I think there's a huge difference between newly written and well written! So many programs come and go so quickly, primarily because they were so poorly written and so poorly received. I was going to say that it's just not like the good ol' days, but look who I'm telling this to . . .

Believe it or not, Annicita, but I've done that too . . . forget to un-mute the TV, and then you lose part of a conversation and you're lost for a bit!
And that Ray Walston/Tom Skeritt show really sounds familiar, but I can't think of its name either . . .

Thanks, Kabu. And that's true. Not only has the number of commercials increased, but the amount of "quality" programming has decreased! What a terrible combination . . .

Re: Jimmy....
That's the way to do it, Rumor! Uncut and uninterrupted is definitely the way to go. And I know what you mean. There was a time when you would watch something, it would go into commercial after commercial after commercial, and by the time the original program came back, you almost forgot what was going on! Ridiculous . . .

Thanks, C C T. And you're right! If the commercials ever become so overwhelming to the point where it's just not worth putting on the TV anymore, we're all in trouble . . .

They have most certainly overdone it! I confess I do find a few entertaining, but it does annoy me because they are things I can't get. Videos save the day when they have become too much. I often get up and do little chores that need to be done when they come on.

Re: jimmy
It sure is, jean! And there's not really anything anyone can do about it! There are many channels that run good movies or halfway decent programming that actually have no commercials, but they are few and far between. And then there are those channels that do have both decent programming and commercials, but that's what the MUTE button is for! Glad you enjoyed this post . . .

Re:
I can believe that, FSI. We already have a few DVD's that actually have advertisements for other movies or shows at the beginning, that you can't fast-forward through. In some cases, it won't even allow you to STOP the DVD until all of the advertisements have run their course! Totally unfair . . . !

Re:
That's very true, lustor! Although I would still automatically hit the MUTE button, there are several commercials that I have sat through that, three-quarters of the way through, I have no idea what they're advertising! And then when you do finally realize what they're advertising, you begin to wonder why they presented all of that ridiculousness before hand just to make a sale! I don't understand . . .

Thanks, adnohr! Yeah, I think many of today's children would benefit from pulling the plug on the TV for a spell and going outside to get some exercise and fresh air! But when it does come time to relax and watch a little tellie, just remember to skip those damned commercials . . . !

That's what it takes, Naut! Years ago, commercials were very simple and very straight-forward; here's our product, here's what it does, we guarantee your satisfaction. Now it's turned into a series of annoying, ridiculous scenarios, and sometimes, you have no idea what they're actually advertising! Terrible . . .

I totally agree with you and I do the same things when a commercial comes on. I will watcha commercial when I know it's humorous like Liberty Mutual Insurance. Of course I sold insurance for them in QC and BC decades ago. Great post and Kabu and I were wondering if we'll ever see newly written shows one day?

I agree with you about the commercials...my sis hits that mute button but then she forgets and we miss part of the show!
I have had several favorites and all of them have been cancelled....Boston Legal, Joan of Arcadia, Ally McBeal, Knots Landing and Sisters....there was another one that I can't remember it's name but Ray Walston played the judge and Tom Skeritt played the sheriff...it was on Friday nights....the show made me think about many issues that we were grappling with then and some still today...

On a couple of my favorite tv shows, an ad (or two or three or whatever) pops up every ten minutes or less..
..they can really ruin the actual program...lately I've been renting various series from the neighborhood video store..

well, very well written post, and i kept saying i know, i know, i know. loved this post because of the truth and it reflects my feeling exactly. i am down to watching movies on the tv, but on encore where there are no commercials. and if you watch some channels there is only 5 minutes of program to 5 minutes of commercials, a waste of time.

I mostly find myself avoiding commercials as well...I put the Fast Forward to my DVR to good use though eventually I will not be surprised if inevitably Fast Forward gets disabled with commercials...YouTube is really getting bad. They one single commercial that can go two minutes. Ug.

Hockey! The only reason there is a TV in my house - or ever had been, except for the kiddie programs when my children were younger. Even then, there was more playing (outside or in) than sitting watching. I agree with you.

Amen! I don't actually watch much any more at all, with the exception of baseball (the Jays, of course) and some stuff on the History channel and the Discovery channel. And I have a routine similar to yours: I hit the mute button and pick up the book I have handy...
