Wonder if it was a queen Naut we have them searching for nesting sites I am afraid I nobble them. I don't mind wasps per se but not nests on the doorstep. Good old Ben he knows a wrong un when he sees one.

I did not expect the wasp twist...That was a whole lot of excitement there.

Naut
Boys of your day and area sure had a lot of ' thou shalt die thingies'. I have seen both hornets and their incredibly intricate nests and you won't die I think although you may wish you would. Good imagery, I enjoyed it.

I thought at the very least it was a Chupacabra...
But it was a suspenseful interesting story complete with a satisfying ending.

I too like bees of all sorts, and spiders as well. We have lots and lots of hornets in our yard, but they are quite docile as long as you do not threaten them. They are thick in the garden when the sunflowers are in bloom and have landed on my arm and hands, but have yet to sting me...I need some wood to knock on here. I must say that I never saw this coming in the previous posts. Ben is good boy.

Ah-ha! So it was a yellow-jacket all along! Well, I can see the potential danger there! I myself have been deathly afraid of bees, wasps and yellow-jackets ever since I was three and was stung in the shoulder by a borer bee! It actually drilled into my collar bone! Very painful, very disheartening! But you sound like my wife. She never kills anything either. As long as there's a chance for a successful capture & release . . .

Naut
Thanks for finally ending the suspense and (especially) for such a delightful story! Glad that you and Ben came through without getting stung, and that the carpet is also unscathed.

Excellent cliff hanging suspense in these, Naut!! Great writing! I never kill them either, but use the same method as I did with the bat; cover with plastic dish and slide under a piece of stiff paper or thin cardboard, then out you go! For some reason I feel the stinger could pierve a paper towel.
Lol at the wine/carpet comment!

I assume I've never been close to a hornet, but Pitiful always took care of wasps, muddaubbers, June bugs and anything else that got into our house. I would find them lying dead on the carpet and know that she had been busy again.

I was once trying to get a close-up shot of a flower
and the darned thing--camera, that is--would not come into proper focus on it. I was three inches from it, and could not get the autofocus to grab onto the flower! wasn't until I got back to the computer that I saw what it was grabbing onto: a hornet sitting on the very same flower. Got fabulous focus on the hornet!
