Like Kabu, I really enjoy stories about "average" people suddenly thrust into circumstances that bring out extraordinary bravery (or courage, or whatever). It's part of the escape, part of the experience of reading.
You find a main character that's 'just like you', watch him perform amazing feats and save the world. And the whole time, you're thinking "gosh, if he can do it, maybe I could too".
It's pure magic.

it's hard to find ways to grab the reader's attention from the beginning. if a book or story doesn't grab my attention within the first 5 pages i never finish it!

Me, too, Kabu. So many 'ordinary' people live such extraordinary lives and display such courage it's humbling.

Re: I don't get what's 'high' about it... Ceil, I thought the same thing..
I think high concept means it's well written and interesting, I think they mean that it sells a lot of ink.

Re:Nautikos - the kitty in the box
As a demonstration that there's something wrong with some assumptions of quantum mechanics - It's also an interesting philosophical argument that even the blonde across the hall can use to solve problems. The big thing I learn when I get into one of these high concept math/science conversations is that they hurt my head if I keep at them too long.

Re: CCT I keep reading books from Amazon...
Apparently it's the world's biggest bookstore. I haven't begun re-reading books after only six months, but sometimes I go back and re-read after I've put a book down and lost track of the story after a week or a month...

I really enjoy stories where ordinary folk find themselves in extraordinary
circumstances and become heroes of a story. That is real bravery to me. Real heroes. now you have had the coffee fix, back to writing anew!!

I don't get what's 'high' about it...
Maybe it's more like "high volume sales" which does seem to be the concept most publishers work with.
And here I was, thinking the 'high' had something to do with quality.

Pat
Unless I completely misunderstand, this definition of 'high concept' boils down to anything that is particularly popular. Since these things change, 'fad' and 'fashion' come into play as well, I guess...And you realize that Schrödinger designed his 'thought experiment' about the kitty in the box as a demonstration that there was something wrong with some of the assumptions of quantum mechanics...

Well Pat I keep reading books from Amazon, they are OK., but I like a book that one can read 6 months later and find it still intrigues. A bit of a rarity
