Maybe the seller has money problems with his own bank and the whole
business has nothing to do with you - the banks themselves have been hinky and unreliable ever since the real estate bubble burst. If there's a semi-crooked issue surrounding that house, maybe you'd be lucky to be completely out of it.

It all sounds as if they are trying to edge out of this deal, I don't know why, although house prices are on the rise and there is no love in business. I think you must stick in there although I would keep an eye out for opportunities. Everyone will love you if you say you are making your Will positive for those who help most.
