Thanks for the responses to this topic. I agree with the additional insights. True, since Freud and before, dealing with minds that deviate from the norm presents a challenge. The best way must include individual attention once noticed odd or strange behavior.

Re: Mental Illness
Most people don't want to accept the fact of mental illness, until they have no choice but to accept it. If they are a friend or family member they need to find out as much as they can about that illness so they can help and cope./LadybugJudy

The brain fascinates me, the more that's discovered about its functioning
and since Freud got us looking at the mind, huge strides have been made in understanding how that works, as well. We understand now that much of our emotional life is profoundly influenced by the chemistry of the brain, and that minds are holistic in nature, their processes and products not entirely inaccessible, even on the subconscious level.
Where spirit fits in is another fascinating topic that I believe meshes with all the rest.

Those who suffer such horrible illnesses need compassion, not judgement.

I agree totally. I do think the outward displays of behavior can help to identify problems of brain function. There will not be a way identify the part of the brain as you stated. Work on the behavior in ways that can identify and place them where they can cause themselves or others can help.

You are correct. They murder and commit suicide. This is a big problem and many think of it as no problem.

Well, as always, it is true that hindsight is 20/20, and people will realize what they should have or could have done after the fact. But at the same time, as you say, many forms of mental illness do exist, and many are difficult to readily see, determine, or fully understand. Of all the human body parts, the brain is the least understood, but great advancements have been made over the years. However, I believe that, no matter how far medical science advances in the study of the mind, I don't think mental illness in general can ever be fully conquered. The regions of the brain are just too vast, and the possibilities of there being even a minor imperfection are still too great . . .
